Transport guide · How to get from Sembalun to Senaru
Sembalun to Senaru is 50 km and takes 90 minutes by car via Bayan — there is no road across Mount Rinjani, so all traffic circles the volcano's north slopes. Private driver costs 250,000-350,000 IDR. This route is critical for trekkers doing trans-Rinjani treks (Sembalun ascent, Senaru descent or vice versa) where vehicles meet hikers on the other side.
| Method | Time | Cost | Comfort | Frequency | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private driver via Bayan | 90 minutes | 250,000-350,000 IDR | On demand | Trekkers and travelers connecting between trailheads | |
| Trek operator vehicle (included in trans-Rinjani treks) | 90 minutes | Included in 2,500,000-4,500,000 IDR trek package | Pre-arranged with trek | Trans-Rinjani trekkers (vast majority) | |
| Ojek (motorbike taxi) | 1.5-2 hours | 200,000-300,000 IDR | Available with notice | Solo travelers without luggage in dry season | |
| Bemo chain | 4-5 hours | 60,000-100,000 IDR | Daytime only, sparse | Indonesian-speaking travelers with no time constraints |
90 minutes · 250,000-350,000 IDR
Tip: Trek operators include this driver service in trans-Rinjani trek packages — confirm before paying separately.
90 minutes · Included in 2,500,000-4,500,000 IDR trek package
Tip: All reputable trek operators include this transfer. If your operator charges extra, they're not full-service.
1.5-2 hours · 200,000-300,000 IDR
Tip: Cheaper than driver only if solo and traveling light. Cold and exposed at higher elevations.
4-5 hours · 60,000-100,000 IDR
Tip: Time-consuming and unreliable. Rarely worth the savings versus a driver.
If you're on a trans-Rinjani trek, this transfer is included — don't pay extra. For independent travelers visiting both villages, book a 250,000-300,000 IDR private driver. The route is one of Lombok's most scenic 90 minutes, descending Sembalun valley with views back toward Rinjani's east face, then circling north through Bayan's traditional villages and historic mosque area.
# Sembalun to Senaru: Around Rinjani, Not Over
Sembalun and Senaru sit on opposite sides of Mount Rinjani — Sembalun east at 1,200 m elevation, Senaru north at 600 m. There is no road across or over the mountain. To go between them, every vehicle takes the same circular route around Rinjani's northern flanks via Bayan.
This route matters most to trans-Rinjani trekkers, who hike up one trailhead and down the other while their bags and driver meet them on the opposite side.
The Rinjani Sembalun-to-Senaru trek (or vice versa) is the classic 3D2N route:
This means trekkers finish the hike on the opposite side from where they started — and they need their luggage, shower, and onward transport. Trek operators handle this with a vehicle that drives the 90-minute Bayan loop while you're on the trail.
For independent travelers (not trekking, just visiting both villages), the same vehicle service is available at standard driver rates.
Sembalun → Aikmel road (descent, 45 min)
The road descends 600 vertical meters from Sembalun valley through traditional Sasak villages and clove plantations. Several stops worth a 5-minute photo break:
Aikmel junction → Bayan (30 min)
Roads improve here. Bayan is the historical and spiritual center of Sasak Wetu Telu animist tradition. The Bayan Beleq mosque (one of the oldest in Indonesia, ~16th century) sits 1 km off the main road and is worth a 15-minute stop with a small donation.
Bayan → Senaru (15 min)
The final 4 km climbs 200 m through coffee farms. Steep but well-paved. Senaru's trek operator offices and homestays are clustered along the main road.
The exact same route works in reverse with similar timing. Some considerations differ:
Most trans-Rinjani treks are arranged like this:
Sembalun start → Senaru finish (most common):
Senaru start → Sembalun finish:
Either way, the cross-mountain driver service is the same.
| Scenario | Cost |
|----------|------|
| Trek-included transfer | 0 (in package) |
| Independent driver Sembalun → Senaru | 250,000-350,000 IDR |
| Reverse direction | Same |
| With Bayan mosque + valley stops | 350,000-450,000 IDR (4-5 hours) |
| Ojek (solo, no luggage) | 200,000-300,000 IDR |
A small number of travelers visit Sembalun and Senaru as separate destinations rather than for trekking:
If this is you, the 250,000-350,000 IDR transfer is the only practical link. No public transport runs the full route in one connection.
Recommended: 9-11 AM departure from either side
Avoid 4-6 PM — Bayan area gets foggy in evening shoulder seasons, and the steep Senaru climb is harder in low light.
Pergasingan Hill is in Sembalun and is unrelated to the Senaru transfer route. If you're making this trip and want to climb Pergasingan, do it before departing Sembalun (sunrise climb 4-6 AM, return 8 AM, transfer 10 AM works well).
