Transport guide · How to get from Tetebatu to Senaru
Tetebatu to Senaru (the northern Rinjani trailhead) is 100 km and takes 2.5-3 hours by car. There are two route options: the scenic north-coast road via Bayan (3 hours) or the inland route via Mataram (2.5 hours but uglier). Private driver costs 500,000-700,000 IDR. No direct public transport exists.
| Method | Time | Cost | Comfort | Frequency | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private driver — Mataram route (faster) | 2.5 hours | 500,000-650,000 IDR | On demand | Travelers in a hurry or with afternoon trek check-in | |
| Private driver — North-coast route (scenic) | 3-3.5 hours | 600,000-750,000 IDR | On demand | Travelers with morning departure and no fixed afternoon trek time | |
| Bemo chain (theoretical) | 6-8 hours | 80,000-120,000 IDR | Multiple connections, gaps | No one realistically |
2.5 hours · 500,000-650,000 IDR
Tip: Faster but less interesting — you're crossing already-developed central Lombok and tourist zones.
3-3.5 hours · 600,000-750,000 IDR
Tip: Worth the extra hour for the highland scenery between Aikmel and Bayan — empty roads, views back to Mount Rinjani's east face.
6-8 hours · 80,000-120,000 IDR
Tip: Avoid this route. The Pemenang-to-Senaru leg has almost no public transport — you'll likely need an ojek (motorbike taxi) for 80,000+ IDR anyway.
If you have a morning trek check-in at Senaru, take the Mataram route to save 30-60 minutes. If you're arriving in Senaru the night before your trek, take the north-coast route for genuinely beautiful highland scenery via Aikmel and Bayan. Both routes use the same driver — just specify your preference at booking. Add 200,000 IDR if you want a stop at Sembalun for traditional village photos.
# Tetebatu to Senaru: Connecting Two Sides of Rinjani
Tetebatu and Senaru both sit on Mount Rinjani's flanks — Tetebatu on the southwest, Senaru on the north — but they're not directly connected by road. The volcano stands between them, forcing all traffic to either circle clockwise (north-coast route) or counter-clockwise (Mataram route).
This is one of Lombok's most underrated drives. Both options pass through countryside that few tourists see, with Mount Rinjani as a constant backdrop.
Mataram route (faster, less scenic):
North-coast route (scenic, longer):
The north-coast route adds one hour but delivers genuinely beautiful and quiet country roads — the kind that makes Lombok memorable.
If you choose the longer route, these stops are worth knowing:
Aikmel highlands (no entry fee, photo stop)
The road climbs from 100 m to 600 m through clove and coffee plantations. The valley views back toward central Lombok are striking on clear mornings.
Bayan (10-min historical stop)
Bayan is the spiritual heart of the Sasak Wetu Telu animist tradition. The ancient Bayan Beleq mosque (one of the oldest in Indonesia) sits 1 km off the main road and is worth a quick stop. Modest dress, no entry fee but small donation appreciated.
Senaru approach
The final 4 km from Bayan to Senaru climbs 200 vertical meters through coffee farms. The road is steep but well-paved.
The faster route via Mataram passes through:
It's faster but doesn't offer much scenically beyond the Mataram-Pemenang coast section.
Most Senaru travelers are heading there for a Rinjani trek (typically 2D1N to crater rim, or 3D2N to summit). Trek check-in times matter:
To make a 6 PM briefing comfortably, leave Tetebatu by 1 PM via Mataram or 11 AM via north coast.
| Route | Solo | Group | With Sembalun stop |
|-------|------|-------|--------------------|
| Mataram (direct) | 500,000 | 600,000 | n/a |
| North coast (direct) | 600,000 | 700,000 | 800,000 |
| Bemo chain | 90,000 | 360,000 (4 pax) | n/a |
If you have an extra 90 minutes, the north-coast route can include a Sembalun stop. Sembalun is a high valley (1,200 m) at the eastern foot of Rinjani — strawberry farms, traditional Sasak architecture, and the alternative Rinjani trailhead. The detour from Bayan adds ~60 km and 90 minutes but lets you see both sides of the mountain on the same drive.
Many trekkers coordinate this so they hike up via Senaru and descend via Sembalun (or vice versa), with their driver meeting them on the other side.
