Transport guide · How to get from Senaru to Sembalun
Senaru to Sembalun is 50 km and takes 90 minutes via Bayan and Aikmel — the same circular route as Sembalun-to-Senaru in reverse, since no road crosses Mount Rinjani. Private driver costs 250,000-350,000 IDR. This is the standard transfer for trekkers who descended via Senaru and need to return to Sembalun for luggage or onward transport.
| Method | Time | Cost | Comfort | Frequency | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private driver via Bayan | 90 minutes | 250,000-350,000 IDR | On demand | Trekkers and travelers heading from Senaru to Sembalun side | |
| Trek operator vehicle (included in trans-Rinjani treks) | 90 minutes | Included in trek package | Pre-arranged | Trans-Rinjani trekkers | |
| Ojek (motorbike taxi) | 1.5-2 hours | 200,000-300,000 IDR | Available with notice | Solo travelers with no bags in dry season | |
| Bemo chain | 4-6 hours | 70,000-110,000 IDR | Daytime only | Almost no one practically |
90 minutes · 250,000-350,000 IDR
Tip: Climb into Sembalun is harder on engines than the descent — older cars sometimes struggle. Newer Avanza/Xenia models handle it fine.
90 minutes · Included in trek package
Tip: All reputable trans-Rinjani treks include this transfer. If charged extra, your operator is incomplete.
1.5-2 hours · 200,000-300,000 IDR
Tip: Cold riding into Sembalun (1,200 m elevation). Bring a windbreaker.
4-6 hours · 70,000-110,000 IDR
Tip: Senaru-to-Bayan leg has minimal public transport. Long, frustrating, often impossible to complete in one day.
If your trek included this transfer (most trans-Rinjani packages do), use that vehicle. Independent travelers should book a 250,000-300,000 IDR private driver via their Senaru homestay or trek office. The route is one of north Lombok's prettiest 90 minutes — empty roads, traditional villages around Bayan, and the climb back into Sembalun's high valley with views back toward Mount Rinjani's east face.
# Senaru to Sembalun: The Other Direction
The Senaru-to-Sembalun route is identical to Sembalun-to-Senaru in reverse — same 50 km Bayan loop, same 90-minute drive time, same scenery just experienced backwards. The reason this direction has its own page is that the trekking logistics work differently depending on which end you start at.
Most travelers making this specific direction are:
1. Trekkers who descended via Senaru after summiting from Sembalun (luggage transfer)
2. Travelers who visited Senaru first (waterfalls, Sendang Gile) and now want to see Sembalun
3. Surfers or beach travelers connecting from north Lombok via Senaru highlands
Climb back into Sembalun valley
The reverse trip climbs from Aikmel (300 m) into Sembalun valley (1,200 m) over the final 30 minutes. This is steeper than the Senaru direction's terrain. Older or underpowered vehicles can struggle — confirm with your driver they have a recent Avanza, Xenia, or similar engine.
Cooler arrival
Sembalun is at 1,200 m elevation versus Senaru at 600 m. Arriving in Sembalun in late afternoon, you'll notice the temperature drop. Pack a light layer for evening if you're staying overnight.
Different views
The eastward direction means you see Mount Rinjani's north slopes for the first hour, then the east face during the climb into Sembalun valley. Photographers should consider this direction as a sunset chase — Rinjani's east face glows golden in late afternoon light.
Senaru → Bayan junction (4 km, 15 min)
Steep descent through coffee farms. The road drops 200 m in 4 km. Cars use engine braking; ojeks should ride cautiously.
Bayan → Aikmel (35 km, 30 min)
Highland farm road through clove plantations and small villages. Empty most of the day. The Bayan Beleq mosque (10 min off the route) is worth a stop if you didn't see it on the outbound.
Aikmel → Sembalun (15 km, 45 min)
The climb. Switchbacks through forest and farmland. The road quality is good — Indonesian government invested in this stretch because Sembalun is the alternative Rinjani trailhead.
Standard 3D2N trans-Rinjani treks structure as:
After Day 3 you arrive at Senaru trailhead exhausted and want a shower. Trek operator vehicle should be waiting with your luggage from Sembalun. After cleanup at the operator's Senaru office:
A smaller number of trekkers do the reverse trans-Rinjani route:
For these treks, the cross-mountain transfer happens at the start, not the end. Trek operator picks up your luggage at Senaru, drives it to Sembalun, and you finish the trek where the luggage is waiting.
Independent travelers occasionally want to see both Senaru and Sembalun without trekking. The recommended itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive Senaru. Visit Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls (afternoon).
Day 2 morning: Visit Bayan Beleq mosque. Drive to Sembalun via Aikmel (90 min).
Day 2 afternoon: Sembalun valley exploration (Pergasingan Hill if energetic, strawberry farms, traditional villages).
Day 3: Return to Mataram or Senggigi (3-4 hours via Aikmel and Mataram).
This uses the Senaru-to-Sembalun direction as a transit segment.
