Sukarara Weaving Village
VerifiedTraditional Sasak songket weaving passed down through generations
Sukarara is a traditional Sasak village where hand-weaving has been the primary occupation for centuries. Every girl in the village learns to weave from the age of seven, and the tradition is taken so seriously that a woman traditionally cannot marry until she has mastered the art. Today, the village welcomes visitors for guided tours that offer a genuine window into this living cultural heritage. A visit begins with a walk through the village's narrow lanes, where you see women sitting cross-legged at their wooden looms on covered verandas, working with extraordinary patience and precision. The intricate patterns — geometric motifs in rich reds, golds, blacks, and blues — tell stories from Sasak mythology and daily life. A single songket sarong can take one to three months to complete by hand. Your guide (usually a young woman from the village) explains the symbolism behind each pattern, the natural dyes used (indigo, turmeric, mahogany bark), and the weaving process from cotton thread to finished textile. You can try weaving yourself — the looms are simple in design but devilishly difficult to operate, giving you deep appreciation for the skill involved. The village has a showroom where you can purchase textiles directly from the weavers, with prices ranging from IDR 100,000 for small pieces to IDR 2,000,000+ for large, intricate songket. Prices are fair and the money goes directly to the artisans. There is no entrance fee, but a donation of IDR 20,000-50,000 is appreciated. The village is located between the airport and Kuta, making it an easy stop en route. Allow 1-2 hours for a visit. Tours run from 8am to 5pm daily.
