Selong Belanak Surf School

Selong Belanak Surf School is the most established and professional surf school operating on Selong Belanak's iconic crescent bay — a beach that is genuinely one of the best places in Indonesia to learn to surf. The school is run by a team of local Sasak surfers who grew up riding these waves and know every shift and mood of the break. Lessons are available for complete beginners through to intermediate surfers looking to progress. The beginner lesson is a 2-hour session (IDR 250,000) that includes a soft-top board, rash guard, and a patient instructor who will have most students standing on their first day. The wave at Selong Belanak is ideal for learning: a long, gentle, rolling whitewater that breaks over sand (not reef), giving students plenty of time to pop up without fear of injury. The beach has a gradual entry, so you can walk out to waist depth and practice there before heading to deeper water. Intermediate lessons (IDR 350,000 for 2 hours) take you to the outside break where the green waves offer more power and longer rides. Multi-day packages offer significant discounts: 3 lessons for IDR 600,000, 5 lessons for IDR 900,000. Board-only rental is IDR 50,000-100,000 per hour depending on board type. The school also rents GoPros (IDR 100,000/session) so you can capture your first wave. All equipment is well-maintained and replaced regularly. The instructors speak conversational English and are genuinely encouraging. After your lesson, you can rinse off at the school's freshwater shower and grab lunch at one of the beachside warungs. Lessons run from 7am to 5pm daily, with early morning and late afternoon being the best times to avoid the midday heat.
