Learn traditional Sasak pottery techniques from master artisans

Banyumulek is Lombok's most famous pottery village, where the tradition of hand-forming clay pots, vases, and decorative items has been passed down through Sasak families for centuries. Unlike factory production, Banyumulek pottery is made entirely by hand using techniques unchanged for generations — no pottery wheel, no kiln, just skilled hands shaping local clay and firing the finished pieces in open bonfires. Visiting the village is a genuine cultural experience: you can watch artisans at work in their home workshops, try your hand at forming a simple pot (the kids especially love this), and browse the showrooms where finished pieces are displayed. The pottery ranges from small souvenir pots at IDR 10,000 to elaborate decorative pieces at IDR 500,000+. Quality varies widely, so take your time and look for even thickness and clean firing. The village is located about 15 minutes south of Mataram, making it an easy half-day excursion. Entry to the village is free, and there is no pressure to buy — though the artisans are appreciative when visitors purchase their work. Several workshops offer hands-on pottery classes for IDR 50,000-100,000 per person. The village is also home to a government-supported pottery center with a small museum explaining the history and cultural significance of Sasak ceramics. Best visited in the morning when most artisans are actively working.
