Sasak Sade Village Tour

Step into centuries-old Sasak culture and traditions

Sade Village is one of the few remaining traditional Sasak villages on Lombok where the indigenous Sasak people still live according to ancestral customs in thatched-roof lumbung (rice barn) houses. A visit here is a genuine cultural experience rather than a staged tourist attraction — real families live here, children play in the dusty lanes, and women still weave traditional ikat textiles on backstrap looms passed down through generations. Village guides (usually young residents who speak English) will lead you through the village, explaining Sasak customs, marriage traditions, and the architectural significance of the lumbung houses. The floors of the houses are made from a mixture of clay and cow dung — sounds unappealing but is actually odorless and incredibly durable. Entry is by donation (IDR 10,000-25,000 per person is appropriate), and you will be invited to buy hand-woven textiles — these are genuinely handmade and represent months of work, so prices of IDR 100,000-500,000 are fair. Do not haggle aggressively. The village is located about 10 minutes south of Kuta on the main road to Tanjung Aan, so it is easy to combine with a beach visit. Photography is generally welcome but always ask first. Visit in the morning when the light is best and the weaving activity is in full swing.
