Pergasingan Hill Sunrise Trek

Epic sunrise hike over the Sembalun Valley

Pergasingan Hill is one of Lombok's most rewarding short hikes — a 1.5-2 hour climb that delivers sunrise views rivaling any mountaintop in Southeast Asia. The trek begins in the pre-dawn darkness from Sembalun village, following a well-trodden path through grasslands and light forest up to the 1,670-meter summit. The final push is steep and your legs will burn, but the payoff is extraordinary: as the sun rises, it illuminates the Sembalun Valley below in shades of gold and green, with the massive bulk of Mount Rinjani dominating the northern skyline. On clear mornings, you can also see Bali's Mount Agung in the distance. The sunrise up here consistently ranks among the most spectacular natural sights in Indonesia. A local guide is strongly recommended (IDR 150,000 per group) as the trail is unmarked and confusing in the dark. Bring a headlamp, warm layers (it is genuinely cold at altitude before dawn), water, and snacks. The descent takes about an hour and offers different perspectives of the valley in full daylight. The hill is also popular for camping, with several flat spots near the summit. The drive from Mataram to Sembalun takes about 2.5 hours, so most people either stay overnight in Sembalun or leave very early. This is a non-negotiable addition to any Lombok itinerary.
