# Sembalun Highland Yoga Retreat: Mountain Yoga in Lombok
Most yoga in Lombok is coastal — Gili shalas, Kuta studios, Senggigi spas. Sembalun is different. The retreat sits at 1,150m elevation in the Sembalun valley directly below Mt. Rinjani's 3,726m summit. Mornings are cool (18°C), nights are colder (14°C), and the sunrise view from the shala is the volcano itself.
This is yoga in the mountains, not yoga at the beach. The clientele is different. The pace is different. The reasons people come are different.
Sembalun Lawang is a Sasak village best known to most travelers as the starting point for Mt. Rinjani treks. The valley is wide, surrounded by Rinjani's caldera ridges, and largely agricultural — Sembalun supplies vegetables (especially carrots and shallots) to half of Lombok. The retreat property is on the eastern edge of the village with the volcano framing every morning view.
You won't find beach. You won't find scooter-rental shops. You will find rice terraces, vegetable plots, Sasak farming families, and the occasional Rinjani trekking porter. The village has 2–3 simple warungs, no cafes, no nightlife. The retreat exists deliberately in this context.
Open-walled construction with windbreak panels for cool mornings. Capacity 14 mats with comfortable spacing. The shala faces northeast — directly toward Rinjani's summit. The 6am class is timed for sunrise: you'll be in your opening sequence as the first light hits the volcano peak.
Floor heating panels are installed (rare in Lombok yoga shalas) so cold mornings don't sabotage practice. Blankets are stacked at the back for savasana.
Sembalun runs retreat-only — no drop-in classes. Check-ins are Sunday or Wednesday, with packages running 3 or 7 nights:
Packages include:
Optional add-ons:
Style is moderate vinyasa in mornings (energetic but not power yoga) and yin or restorative in evenings. Teachers are Indonesian and foreign, both with serious training. Class size is capped at 14 so teacher attention is real.
The cool climate genuinely changes practice. You can hold longer, your body doesn't overheat, savasana is comfortable under a blanket. After a week of practice in tropical sweat, the highland environment feels like a different sport.
Sembalun's location in the vegetable belt means real local produce — carrots, kale, broccoli, tomatoes, all from farms within 2km. Menu is fully vegetarian, mostly Indonesian (with some Western options for breakfast). Honest about portions: it's not gourmet plating, it's home-cooked retreat food. Filling, fresh, well-spiced.
Book Sembalun if you specifically want a quiet wellness retreat away from coastal tourist zones. Book if Mt. Rinjani is part of your Lombok plan and you want to acclimatize while doing yoga. Book if cool-climate yoga matters to you. Book if you're traveling solo and want guaranteed small-group bonding.
Skip Sembalun if you want beach access during your retreat, if you need flexibility (fixed check-in days don't accommodate every itinerary), or if you find isolated mountain villages claustrophobic. Coastal alternatives like H2O Gili Air or Ashtari Kuta will suit better.
The 3-hour transfer from Lombok International Airport is not optional — Sembalun is genuinely remote. Plan around this.
