Sembalun Detox Retreat is Lombok's main juice cleanse and detox program — 5 or 10 day fasting protocols (8M and 14M IDR) using cold-pressed juices, Sasak jamu herbal preparations, and supportive yoga at 1,150m highland elevation. Intensive cleanse, not relaxation retreat.
# Sembalun Detox & Cleanse Retreat: Highland Juice Fasting
Detox programs are a controversial wellness category — proper medical opinion ranges from "occasionally beneficial when done correctly" to "expensive placebo." If you're committed to trying juice fasting, doing it in a supportive supervised environment at 1,150m highland elevation is significantly better than attempting it solo.
Sembalun Detox Retreat is Lombok's main option for this. The protocol is genuine — extended cold-pressed juice fasting with Sasak jamu herbal preparations, daily yoga, daily massage, doctor supervision. It's intensive, not relaxing.
Programs are 5 or 10 days. Both follow a similar structure with the 10-day version going deeper into rejuvenation phase:
Day 1 (preparation): Light raw vegetable meal + green smoothies. Body adjustment day. Doctor consultation.
Days 2–4 (intensive cleanse): Cold-pressed juice only — typically 6 servings per day spaced through the day. Green vegetable juices, fruit juices, root vegetable juices. Plus herbal Sasak jamu preparations 2x daily. Plus warm vegetable broth in evenings (not strictly fasting, supports the protocol). Daily yoga, daily massage, herbal steam.
Days 5–7 (gradual reintroduction, 5-day program): Smoothies and pureed vegetable soups. Continue jamu and treatments.
Days 5–10 (continued fasting + rejuvenation, 10-day program): Continued juice fasting through day 7, then gradual food reintroduction with raw vegetables, fermented foods, and supportive nutrition.
Doctor checks vitals daily — blood pressure, heart rate, hydration markers. If anything indicates the protocol isn't suiting you, the program is adjusted or you're transitioned out of fasting earlier.
Cold-pressed daily on-site, using locally-grown produce from Sembalun's vegetable belt. Typical juice rotation:
Plus herbal jamu preparations — turmeric-based "kunyit asam," tamarind-ginger tonics, Sasak village recipes for digestive support.
This is the unusual differentiator. Most detox retreats globally use generic Western juice cleanse protocols. Sembalun integrates traditional Sasak jamu (herbal tonics) prepared by a local jamu maker who has 30+ years experience with traditional preparations. The herbs come from forest gathering and village gardens around Sembalun.
Whether jamu does what Sasak tradition says it does (anti-inflammatory, digestive support, immune boost) is medically debatable. What's clear: drinking traditionally-prepared jamu in the village where the herbs were gathered is a different cultural experience than drinking generic detox tea.
Property has 5 highland bungalows, all twin or king. Simple construction — bamboo and stone — with proper insulation for cold Sembalun nights (temperatures drop to 14°C). Each bungalow has private bathroom with hot water, ceiling fan (no air-con needed at this elevation), warm bedding, herbal aromatherapy diffuser.
Common spaces: yoga shala, treatment rooms (3 rooms), dining/lounge hall, herbal steam room, garden walking paths, small library.
Yoga is gentle — Hatha-influenced slow flow and yin. Energy levels during fasting are reduced; intensive vinyasa would be inappropriate. Two sessions daily (morning and afternoon, ~60 minutes each).
Treatments include daily warm-oil massage (40 minutes), every-other-day herbal steam (30 minutes), and 1–2 longer treatments per program (full Sasak boreh body scrub or extended Indian-influenced abhyanga session).
The retreat screens via pre-arrival questionnaire and on-site doctor consultation, but you should self-screen first. Juice fasting is not a casual wellness choice.
If you specifically want juice fasting, Sembalun Detox is genuinely the option. If you want medical-grade Ayurvedic detox without strict liquid fasting, OneWorld is better.
Book Sembalun Detox if you're genuinely committed to juice fasting and want supervised highland environment. Book if Sasak jamu integration interests you culturally. Book if you've fasted before and know your body responds well.
Skip if you've never fasted (start at home with a 1–2 day cleanse first), if you can't commit to no-solid-food (honestly, most people struggle), or if relaxation rather than discomfort is your goal.
