# Perama Tour Shuttle: The Backpacker Bali-Lombok Connection
Perama has been operating tourist shuttles across Bali, Lombok, and Java since 1990 — long before Bali became the polished tourist economy it is today. The Bali-Lombok shuttle uses the slow car ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar, sandwiched between bus connections to tourist hubs on both sides. Total journey time is 8-10 hours and total cost is 350-500k IDR.
If you have time and want to save money compared to fast boats, this is the established way to do it.
A typical Perama Bali-Lombok shuttle journey:
1. Morning bus pickup in Bali (e.g., Ubud at 7am or Kuta at 8am)
2. Bus drive to Padang Bai (1.5-2 hours)
3. Slow ferry crossing Padang Bai to Lembar (4-5 hours)
4. Bus drive from Lembar to your Lombok destination (1.5-2 hours to Senggigi, 1 hour to Mataram, 1 hour to Kuta Lombok)
5. Drop-off at your hotel or near the Perama office
Total: 8-10 hours door-to-door depending on route and traffic.
The Padang Bai-Lembar ferry is a working car ferry — it carries cars, motorbikes, trucks, livestock, and passengers. Crossings depart roughly every 1-2 hours, 24/7, and take 4-5 hours.
This is genuinely different from a fast boat:
It's slow but it's also a lot more pleasant in many ways than a cramped fast boat. You can walk around, chat with people, eat properly, and watch the scenery.
Bali to Lombok (one-way per person):
Return tickets receive a small discount (typically 10-15%).
The price compares favorably to fast boats:
For a couple traveling round-trip, Perama saves 1-2M IDR compared to fast boats. That's a meaningful weekend's spending money.
Choose Perama when:
Choose fast boat instead when:
Perama's Bali-Lombok shuttle drops you at Senggigi, Mataram, or Kuta Lombok — not at the Gili Islands. To reach the Gilis from a Perama drop-off, you need:
1. Senggigi to Bangsal Harbor by private driver (250k IDR, 40 minutes)
2. Public boat from Bangsal to Gili Trawangan/Air/Meno (75-100k per person, 25-45 minutes)
Total additional time: 1.5-2 hours and 325-350k per person.
So total Bali-to-Gili via Perama: ~10-12 hours and 700-850k per person. Still cheaper than fast boat for some, but the time delta is significant.

Don't pack:
Perama offices in tourist hubs (Kuta, Ubud, Sanur, Lovina, Senggigi, Mataram, Kuta Lombok) sell tickets directly. Online booking via peramatour.com works. WhatsApp confirmation is usually possible.
Book 1-3 days ahead for shuttle service. Same-day booking sometimes works in low season but seats fill in peak season.
Backpackers and budget travelers, anyone with time flexibility, overland travelers connecting Bali-Lombok-Flores, wet-season visitors avoiding fast boat unreliability, and travelers who appreciate slower-paced local experiences. Skip if you're going specifically to the Gilis (fast boat is faster door-to-door), if your time is more valuable than the savings, or if you can't tolerate basic shuttle bus comfort levels.
