# Gerupuk Board Rental: Surfing the Bay from the Village Side
Gerupuk Bay is one of Lombok's most consistent surf zones — four reef breaks (Inside Right, Outside, Don Don, Kid's Point) facing different directions, working at different tides and swell sizes, all accessed by short boat ride from the village. Most surfers based in Kuta drive 35 minutes east each morning. A smaller, more committed crew bases themselves in Gerupuk village itself — and uses the village board rental as their daily logistics base.
Gerupuk is a working Sasak fishing village on the east side of Kuta. It's not a tourist development — there's no hotel strip, no fancy cafes, just village houses, a small harbor, a few warungs, and the surf operations that have grown up around the bay's reef breaks.
The breaks are 5–15 minutes by boat from the village harbor. You can't paddle out from the beach — the bay is too long and the current too strong. So everyone uses local boat boys, who run small wooden outriggers with two-stroke engines and shaded canopies. A typical session is 1.5–2 hours.
This is a small operation by Kuta standards — one shopfront, 15–20 rental boards, basic accessories. But it covers the essentials:
Inspect rental boards carefully. The fleet is older than Kuta Surf Shop's — surface dings are common. Take photos of any pre-existing damage when you check the board out so you don't get charged for it on return.
Deposit is your passport (held during rental) or 1.5M IDR cash.
The rental shop coordinates with the local boat boys for transfers:
Boats fit 4–6 surfers comfortably. If you're solo, you'll be combined with other surfers heading the same direction. Coordinated departures: 6:30am, 9:30am, 1pm, 3:30pm — though times flex with tide and conditions.
For surfers focused on Gerupuk-only sessions, basing in the village makes sense:
For surfers wanting to mix Gerupuk with Mawi, Are Guling, and Selong Belanak — base in Kuta. The village base is for Gerupuk specialists.
Location: Gerupuk village center, near the harbor wall. From Kuta, drive east on the main road for 20 minutes to the Gerupuk turn-off, then 8 minutes south on the village road.
Hours: 6am to 6pm officially. In practice, the shop opens for the dawn boat run and closes after the afternoon return.
Payment: Cash IDR only. Bring small notes (50k, 100k).
Combine with: Boat session, lunch at a village warung (15–25k IDR), afternoon session. Full surf day budget: 80k board + 300k two boat sessions + 25k lunch + 20k drinks = ~425k IDR.
Use the Gerupuk village rental if you're surfing Gerupuk specifically and want to skip the daily Kuta commute. Especially valuable for committed multi-day Gerupuk sessions. Skip if you want a wider board selection, English-fluent service, or are mixing Gerupuk with other south Lombok breaks (in which case Kuta-based rentals are more efficient).
