Hidden cove accessible only by a cliffside trail

Tampah Beach is one of South Lombok's most dramatic hidden beaches — a small, pristine cove wedged between towering cliffs that is accessible only by a steep trail from the road above. The beach is not signposted and is easy to drive past, which is precisely what keeps it gloriously empty. To find it, look for a small parking area on the coastal road between Kuta and Selong Belanak, roughly 20 minutes west of Kuta. A narrow footpath leads down through scrubby hillside vegetation to the cliff edge, then descends steeply via roughly carved steps and natural rock footholds. The descent takes about 10-15 minutes and requires reasonable fitness and footwear with grip — flip-flops are not advisable. At the bottom, you are rewarded with a small crescent of white sand flanked by dark volcanic rock formations, turquoise water that is almost impossibly clear, and — on most days — complete solitude. The swimming is generally safe in the sheltered cove, but check conditions from above before descending. There are no facilities whatsoever: no shade, no water, no vendor, no toilet. Bring everything you need including plenty of water and sun protection. The rock formations at either end of the beach create small tide pools that are fun to explore when the tide is low. The cliff walls catch dramatic light in the late afternoon, making this an exceptional photography location. Leave nothing behind and take all rubbish with you — this is exactly the kind of pristine place that deserves preservation. Best visited in the morning before the sun is directly overhead.
