Wild surf beach on Sekotong's rugged coast

Mekaki Beach is a wild, raw stretch of coastline on Sekotong's southwestern tip — a beach for adventurers rather than sunbathers. The powerful waves here attract experienced surfers who come for the consistent left-hand break, but this is not a spot for beginners. The beach is dramatic: dark sand mixed with white, backed by grassy hills and rocky outcrops, with powerful Indian Ocean swells crashing onto shore. There are zero facilities here — no warungs, no rental shops, nothing. Bring everything you need and be prepared for a genuine wilderness beach experience. The access road is rough and unsigned, requiring a motorbike or car with decent clearance. From the main Sekotong road, follow the signs toward Mekaki village and ask locals for directions to the beach. The final approach involves a steep downhill track. Despite the remoteness, the beach is a popular camping spot for Indonesian adventure groups on weekends. The surrounding landscape is beautiful — dry, rugged hills covered in scrub that turn green during wet season. Swimming is only safe in the sheltered rock pools at the eastern end; the main beach has dangerous currents and no lifeguard presence. Check the surf forecast before making the trip if you are coming specifically to surf. The drive from Kuta takes about two hours.
