Indonesia's most legendary left-hand barrel — for experts only

Desert Point — known locally as Bangko Bangko — is one of the most famous surf breaks in the world. Located on Lombok's remote southwestern tip near the entrance to the Lombok Strait, this long, hollow left-hand barrel is regarded by many professional surfers as the single best wave in Indonesia, rivaling even G-Land in East Java. When the swell and wind align — typically between May and September — Desert Point produces perfectly mechanical barrels that peel for 200+ meters along a shallow coral reef, offering tube rides that last 10-15 seconds of pure, flawless barrel time. Videos of Desert Point sessions regularly go viral in the surf world. However, this is emphatically NOT a wave for beginners or even intermediate surfers. The take-off is critical, the reef is shallow and sharp, and the consequences of falling are serious. Helmets and reef boots are recommended, and surfing alone is dangerous. The beach itself is a beautiful stretch of white sand backed by dry, savannah-like hills — hence the "desert" name. The landscape feels dramatically different from Lombok's lush tropical interior, almost Australian in character. Facilities are extremely basic: a few simple losmen (guesthouses) and warungs have sprung up to cater to surfers, with rooms around IDR 150,000-250,000 and meals IDR 20,000-35,000. Getting there requires a 3-4 hour drive from Kuta on roads that deteriorate progressively — the final stretch is a bone-jarring dirt track. Alternatively, boat access from Sekotong takes about 45 minutes. The isolation, the rawness of the landscape, and the quality of the wave combine to create one of surfing's great pilgrimage destinations. Even non-surfers can appreciate the spectacle of watching experts thread through perfect barrels from the beach.
