Transport guide · How to get from Bangko Bangko (Desert Point) to Kuta Lombok
Bangko Bangko (Desert Point) to Kuta is 105 km and takes 3 hours by car via Sekotong, Lembar, and Praya — the longest south-coast surf transfer on Lombok. Private driver costs 500,000-700,000 IDR. Most surfers leave Desert Point only when conditions die or to catch flights, since the area itself has limited accommodation and supplies.
| Method | Time | Cost | Comfort | Frequency | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private driver — direct | 3 hours | 500,000-700,000 IDR | On demand (book day before) | All travelers leaving Desert Point | |
| Surf camp shuttle (limited availability) | 3 hours | 300,000-500,000 IDR per seat (when available) | Irregular — depends on camp's other guest movements | Surfers ending a multi-day camp stay | |
| Scooter (own rental) | 3.5-4 hours | Fuel ~50,000 IDR | Daytime only | Solo backpackers without boards |
3 hours · 500,000-700,000 IDR
Tip: Some drivers refuse this route or charge premium because of distance. Book at least 24 hours ahead through your camp.
3 hours · 300,000-500,000 IDR per seat (when available)
Tip: Desert Point camps don't run daily shuttles like Ekas — they batch riders going home. Plan your departure around camp schedules.
3.5-4 hours · Fuel ~50,000 IDR
Tip: Long ride exposed to weather. The Pelangan-to-Sekotong section has unpaved patches. Add 30-min lunch stop at Sekotong.
Book a private driver via your Desert Point camp the day before departure. The 3-hour drive is too long for daily shuttle frequency, so most camps batch departing surfers when possible. Solo travelers without camp connections should expect to pay 600,000-700,000 IDR — the distance and remote pickup justify the higher rate. Don't attempt this with valuable boards on a scooter.
# Bangko Bangko to Kuta: The Long South-Coast Crossing
Bangko Bangko — better known internationally as Desert Point — is Lombok's most remote serious surf break. The 105 km return trip to Kuta crosses the entire southern half of the island, taking 3 hours through Sekotong, Lembar, and Praya before reaching the south-coast surf hub.
This is the longest single-leg drive most travelers make on Lombok, and it requires planning.
Bangko Bangko sits on Lombok's southwestern tip — a windswept peninsula with no commercial infrastructure beyond a few surf camps and warungs. Roads in the area are narrow, partially unpaved, and built for fishing boats and surf trucks rather than tourist traffic. Once you commit to going to Desert Point, leaving requires the same 3-hour commitment.
This is why dedicated surfers stay 5-10 days when they go — the transit cost (time and money) is significant relative to a single-day visit.
Phase 1 — Bangko Bangko → Sekotong (45 km, 90 min)
The first 30 km is the slowest. From Desert Point, the road climbs through Pelangan village (small, rough, occasional unpaved sections) before joining the main Sekotong road. Once on the main road, pace improves to highway speeds.
Phase 2 — Sekotong → Lembar → Mantang (30 km, 30 min)
This is the fastest section. The Sekotong-to-Lembar coast road is well-maintained. Lembar (the ferry harbor for Bali) bypass routes you north to Mantang junction without entering Lembar town.
Phase 3 — Mantang → Praya → Kuta (30 km, 60 min)
Standard south-coast bypass via Praya. Some midday traffic but generally fast.
Unlike Ekas (which has daily Kuta shuttles), Desert Point camps run shuttles only when:
This means you can't reliably plan around a shuttle — you must check with your specific camp 1-2 days in advance.
If a shuttle is running, expect to pay 300,000-500,000 IDR per seat. Without a shuttle, full driver charter at 500,000-700,000 IDR is standard.
Best departure: 8-10 AM
For airport runs: 6-7 AM
Avoid: After 2 PM
| Method | Cost | Time | Notes |
|--------|------|------|-------|
| Camp shuttle (when available) | 300,000-500,000 IDR/seat | 3 hours | Best value when running |
| Private driver | 500,000-700,000 IDR | 3 hours | Standard, always available |
| Scooter (own) | 50,000 IDR fuel | 3.5-4 hours | Boards impractical |
| Bemo chain | 100,000-150,000 IDR | 6-8 hours | Not recommended |
In rare cases (peak Bali holiday weeks, festivals), drivers from Desert Point may all be booked. Backup options:
Same route until Praya, where you turn east instead of south. 3.5 hours total Desert Point to LOP, 600,000-800,000 IDR private driver. For early flights, leave Desert Point by 5 AM — yes, before sunrise. This means coordinating with camp for headlamp departure.
Same route in reverse, same timing. Most surfers heading to Desert Point arrive at Kuta first, then arrange transport. The 500,000-700,000 IDR rate applies in either direction.
Despite the 3-hour transit, Desert Point remains a pilgrimage break:
Surfers willing to commit to multi-day stays accept the transit cost. Casual visitors should reconsider — Desert Point isn't a day-trip or weekend destination.
