Gili Air Santay is the quintessential island budget accommodation — charming bamboo bungalows surrounded by tropical gardens, just a two-minute walk from Gili Air's beautiful east coast beach. The name says it all: "santay" (santai) means relaxed in Indonesian, and that is exactly the vibe. Each bungalow is a simple but thoughtfully designed open-air structure with a comfortable double bed, mosquito net, fan, small terrace with hammock, and ensuite bathroom with cold-water shower (perfectly refreshing in the tropical heat). The construction uses natural bamboo and alang-alang grass roofing, giving each unit an authentic island feel. A small saltwater pool in the central garden provides a cooling dip between beach sessions. The communal area has beanbags, a book exchange library, and serves a basic breakfast (included) of banana pancake or toast with fruit and coffee. The owner, a Gili Air local named Rizal, is a fountain of knowledge about the island — he can point you to the best snorkeling spots, arrange a freediving introduction, or recommend which warung has the freshest fish today. Rooms cost IDR 250,000-350,000 per night depending on season, which is excellent value for Gili Air where accommodation can be pricey. WiFi is basic. No AC — the ocean breeze through the bamboo walls keeps things comfortable. Bring cash. The location on the east coast means you get morning sun and a short walk to the best snorkeling.
