Lombok is genuinely one of Indonesia's main South Sea pearl producers. Farms in Sekotong (south Lombok) grow gold, white, and silver South Sea pearls in oysters; freshwater pearls are imported from China. At Senggigi market, here's the honest hierarchy:

• Loose South Sea pearls at 300k–2M IDR each — usually genuine, but grade varies.
• South Sea pearl strands at 5–20M IDR — possibly genuine; verify with a reputable shop first.
• Pearl strands at 100–500k IDR — almost certainly freshwater or shell pearls, not South Sea.
• "Black Tahitian" pearls cheap — usually dyed freshwater. Real Tahitian pearls are not produced in Lombok at all.

For serious pearl purchases, visit Mutiara Pearl in Cakranegara or one of the certified shops near Mataram Mall. For casual costume jewelry, Senggigi market is fine — just don't pay South Sea prices for freshwater.

Standard Senggigi opening prices are 2–3x the realistic settle. Sample range:

• Sarong asking 200k IDR → settle 70–90k.
• Wooden mask asking 600k IDR → settle 200–300k.
• Generic T-shirt asking 150k IDR → settle 50–70k.

Walk away. Vendors will follow you to the next stall. The "last price, friend" routine is part of the theatre — it usually has 20–30% more room.

• Sarongs and beachwear — fine for what they are, even at tourist markup.
• Sasak masks and small carvings — decorative, lightweight, easy to pack.
• Spice packs — overpriced vs. Cakranegara but still cheap by international standards.
• Coffee beans — Lombok arabica is decent; check vacuum-sealed packs.

• Expensive pearl strands — buy from a specialist if you want quality.
• "Antique" anything — not the place for genuine antiques.
• Electronics, watches, branded sunglasses — fakes.

Senggigi Art Market is for travelers staying in Senggigi who want one easy souvenir-shopping session and don't want to travel to Mataram. It's also fine for last-day "I need gifts for the office" runs. Skip it if you want serious pearl jewelry, genuine antiques, or wholesale prices — Cakranegara, Ampenan, and the dedicated pearl shops in Mataram all do those things better.
