Senggigi main strip (north central)
★ 4.3(510 reviews)
Papaya Cafe Bar is one of the Senggigi main strip's most established live music venues — slightly more polished than Gili Cafe Bar with a similar nightly cover-band format, full restaurant menu, and a mixed Indonesian-Western crowd. Bintang 40,000 IDR, cocktails 80,000–120,000 IDR. Open 4pm to 1am with live music from 8:30pm.
# Papaya Cafe Bar: Senggigi's Dinner-and-Music Anchor
Papaya Cafe Bar sits on the Senggigi main strip a few hundred meters north of Gili Cafe Bar and runs essentially the same format — open daily, live cover bands from mid-evening to closing, mixed Indonesian and Western crowd, full Indonesian and Western menu. The differences are subtle: Papaya is slightly more polished, has a stronger food kitchen, and the price point is a small step up from Gili Cafe Bar.
If you're staying in Senggigi and you want one bar that handles dinner and drinks and music in a single visit, Papaya is the answer.
Open at 4pm with the bar serving food and drinks through dinner hours. Live music starts at 8:30pm — slightly earlier than Gili Cafe Bar's 9pm — with a house cover band playing two or three sets through to closing at 1am. The bands are part of the Senggigi cover-band rotation (perhaps 5–6 working bands cycling between local venues) so you'll see the same musicians at different bars on different nights.
The repertoire is the standard Senggigi cover-band setlist — 80s and 90s Western rock (Eagles, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, CCR), Indonesian classics (Dewa 19, Slank, Iwan Fals), and a few crowd-pleaser additions for the mixed audience.
This is Papaya's distinguishing feature. The kitchen runs a more ambitious menu than Gili Cafe Bar with proper restaurant-quality execution.
Indonesian highlights: ayam taliwang (Lombok's signature spiced grilled chicken — 90k IDR), beef rendang (110k), grilled red snapper with sambal matah (180k), nasi campur with multiple proteins (90k), gado-gado (50k). The ayam taliwang here is genuinely good — properly marinated, charred at the right level, served with the regional kangkung sauce.
Western: pizza (90k–150k), pasta carbonara (110k), Caesar salad (90k), grilled tuna steak (180k), beef burger (130k), fish and chips (130k). Quality is decent diner-tier, more polished than the average backpacker bar.
This is one of the few venues where you can comfortably eat dinner and stay for several hours of music without the food-to-drinks pivot feeling forced.
Bintang large bottle is 40,000 IDR — slight premium over Gili Cafe Bar's 35k but still fair for the strip. Cocktails run 80,000–120,000 IDR. The cocktail program is slightly more polished than Gili Cafe Bar — fresher juices, decent measures, more careful presentation — but still firmly in beach-bar territory rather than craft cocktail.
Try the Lombok Sour (95k IDR with local citrus) or the Senggigi Sunset (110k IDR — passion fruit, rum, lime). Standard tropical drinks are reliable.
Wine is available with a small list (60k per glass for house, 90k for slightly better). Spirits and shots run 30–60k.
Slightly more polished than Gili Cafe Bar but still firmly casual — board shorts and flip-flops are fine, smart casual works equally. The crowd skews slightly older and slightly more Western than Gili Cafe Bar (where the mix tilts more Indonesian), but it's still genuinely mixed.
Couples on Lombok holiday, dive professionals from Senggigi-based shops, expat residents, occasional luxury hotel guests escaping their resort, Indonesian visitors from Mataram. Median age late 20s to 50s. Conversation level normal until the bands hit their second set when the dance area in front of the stage fills.
Solo travelers do well, especially at the bar counter. Solo female travelers report Papaya as comfortable — the slightly older mixed-couples crowd and the dinner-restaurant context reduce any party-bar intensity.
The standard Senggigi evening for a Western tourist: 6pm dinner at Papaya (or one of the seafront restaurants), 8:30pm music starts, drinks and music until 11pm, decision point. If you want one more drink, stay until midnight. If you want to dance, walk down to Ozzo Club. If you want to call it a night, head to your hotel.
Papaya is the most efficient single-venue option for a complete Senggigi evening because it handles dinner, drinks, and music well across one stop.
Central Senggigi main strip, north of central. 5–10 minute walk from most central hotels. Outer hotels need Grab at end of night (20,000–60,000 IDR). Cash and card both work, though the card terminal can be hit-or-miss; bring backup cash.
If you want one venue for dinner, drinks, and live music — Papaya is the most efficient. If you want slightly more polished service than Gili Cafe Bar. If you appreciate cover-band live music. If you want to try Lombok's signature ayam taliwang in a comfortable setting.
Skip Papaya if you want craft cocktails (basic only), if you want EDM or electronic music (cover bands only), if you want late-late-night options (1am close), or if you want the cheapest possible Bintang (Gili Cafe Bar wins).
