Main strip, Gili Trawangan
★ 4.0(4,120 reviews)
Hotel Vila Ombak opened in 1996 as the first proper hotel on Gili Trawangan and remains one of the largest beachfront properties on the island. Rooms run 1,000,000–2,500,000 IDR per night across garden bungalows, deluxe rooms, and pool villas. It is showing its age in the older blocks but the location, in-house dive centre and full-service infrastructure are unmatched on Gili T at this price point.
# Hotel Vila Ombak Gili Trawangan: The Original Gili Resort
Hotel Vila Ombak holds a unique position on Gili Trawangan — it was the first real hotel on the island, opened in 1996 when Gili T was still a backpacker outpost with a handful of bamboo bungalows. Three decades later it is still one of the largest and most full-service properties on the island, even if some of the rooms are starting to show their years.
Vila Ombak was developed by an Indonesian-Japanese partnership in the mid-1990s and has remained under similar ownership since. The property occupies a long stretch of the main beachfront strip on Gili T's east coast — directly facing the boat harbour and the Lombok mainland.
The on-site Blue Marlin Dive Centre is a separate business but operates exclusively from the resort beach, making this the most practical Gili T base for divers who want to avoid daily logistics.
Four main categories. Superior Bungalows are the original 1990s thatched units (1,000,000–1,300,000 IDR) — character but dated. Deluxe Rooms are in newer blocks with modern bathrooms (1,300,000–1,700,000 IDR). Akoya Villas are standalone units with private outdoor showers (1,700,000–2,200,000 IDR). Pool Villas have private plunge pools (2,000,000–2,500,000 IDR).
For most guests the Deluxe Rooms in the newer blocks deliver the best value. The Pool Villas are competitive with much pricier Bali options. Avoid the Superior Bungalows unless you specifically want the original 1990s character — the price gap to Deluxe is small and the comfort gap is large.
Vila Ombak is on Gili T's east coast main strip, about 5 minutes on foot from the public boat harbour. This puts you directly on the busiest beach on the island, with restaurants, dive shops, and the night market within 5–10 minutes' walk. The hotel grounds are large enough that the rooms feel set back from the strip noise, but evening sound from beach bars carries on weekends in high season.
Free bicycles and snorkel gear are available at reception. The hotel beach is decent for swimming at high tide and excellent for sunrise — the eastern aspect catches first light over Lombok.
The dive operation is the standout. Blue Marlin runs PADI courses and fun dives daily from the resort beach — no need to walk anywhere with gear, all logistics handled in-house. For divers, this convenience alone often justifies the booking.
Food is mid-range and consistent. The main beachfront restaurant runs an international menu (mains 100,000–250,000 IDR) and is one of the better hotel restaurants on Gili T. The Sasak restaurant on the property serves more authentic regional dishes at slightly lower prices and is often empty even in high season — worth seeking out.
The two pools cover different moods: the main pool is large and busy, the smaller pool by the older bungalows is quieter. The swim-up bar runs daily.
The property's main weakness is uneven maintenance. The newer Deluxe blocks and Pool Villas are well-maintained and modern. The original Superior Bungalows have had cosmetic refurbishments but feel their age — some report mildew, dated bathrooms, and unreliable Wi-Fi. Always ask which block you're being placed in before confirming the booking.
Service is friendly but not as polished as newer chain properties. Some staff have been at Vila Ombak for 15+ years and bring genuine warmth; others are clearly newer and less trained. Front desk handles dive bookings, transfers, and tour logistics competently.
Book here if you are diving on Gili T and want zero-friction access to the dive centre, or if you want a full-service resort directly on the main beach strip with a real pool, real restaurants, and real spa. Pool Villa bookings are particularly good value compared to Bali equivalents.
Skip if you want a brand-new property without compromise (PinkCoco or Pondok Santi do that better), if you are a light sleeper who needs total quiet (the main strip can be noisy), or if you want a quieter sunset-side location (try Aston Sunset Beach or Mahamaya).
