Kuta Lombok, south Lombok
★ 4.2(489 reviews)
Pipes is the cheapest credible hostel in Kuta Lombok, run by surfers for surfers, with dorm beds from 180,000 IDR and a no-frills atmosphere. It's the meeting point for solo travellers chasing the south coast surf circuit, has decent board storage and ding repair contacts, but the rooms are basic and the bathrooms see heavy traffic. Worth it if budget trumps comfort and you want immediate plug-in to the surf scene.
# Pipes Hostel Kuta Lombok: The Surfer Bunkhouse
Pipes opened in 2018 as a no-frills bunkhouse aimed at travelling surfers, named after the famously punishing North Shore wave. It's the rougher-around-the-edges sibling to Yoga Searcher and Mad Monkey — cheaper, less polished, more genuine to the original Kuta backpacker spirit before the area got smoothed out.
Owned and operated by a Lombok-Brazilian husband-and-wife team who both surf, with a small staff of local guys who all surf too. The property is a single-storey converted house on Jalan Mawi with three dorms, two private rooms, an outdoor kitchen, and a covered common area. No pool, no cafe, no yoga shala — by design.
The crowd is about 70% surf-focused, the other 30% solo backpackers who found it through word of mouth. Average age 22–30. Skews male and slightly Australian/European.
Two dorm options. The 8-bed mixed dorm with fan runs 180,000 IDR per bed. The 6-bed female-only fan dorm is 200,000 IDR. Both have basic timber bunks with thin foam mattresses, sheets, and a small locker each — bring a padlock or buy one at reception for 50,000 IDR.
Private rooms are 400,000–450,000 IDR for two with fan, shared bathroom. There are two of them, they book out, and they're the only option for couples wanting some privacy.
There is no air-conditioning anywhere in the property. In the dry season (April–October) nights are warm but bearable; in shoulder months it's fine.
Pipes is on Jalan Mawi about 400m back from the Kuta strip — closer to the beach than Yoga Searcher but on a busier road. The walk to Kuta beach is 8 minutes, and most of the central Kuta restaurants and warungs are within a 10-minute radius.
The killer feature for surfers is the daily 6am truck to Mawi and Are Guling — a pickup with a board rack that takes up to 6 guests for 70,000 IDR per person each way. This is genuinely cheaper than a scooter rental once you factor in petrol and the fact you don't have to drive home tired and salty.
The bathrooms are the main weakness. Three for the whole property, hot water on the mains pressure (read: weak), and at 7am they're mobbed. If you're sensitive to that, plan to shower at 6am pre-surf or 11am post-surf when the queue clears.
The kitchen is basic but functional — gas hob, big fridge, communal cookware. Most guests cook a few meals a week to stretch budget, especially after the warung-fatigue of the third week of nasi goreng.
Where Pipes earns its loyalty is the surf intel and connections. The owners surf every morning and will tell you honestly which break suits which conditions, which guides are worth their fee, and which board fits the swell. Ding repair is arranged through a local guy who turns up the same day — saves you a trip across the strip with a broken board.
The vibe is sociable in a low-key way. There's no organised activities and no party scene — just people sitting in the common area in the evening drinking Bintangs and talking about the morning's session. If you want stimulation outside that, Kuta has plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance.
Wi-Fi is real but limited. It works fine in the common area, gets shaky in the back dorms. Fine for messaging and basic browsing, slow for video calls.
Book Pipes if you're a surfer or aspiring surfer on a budget, travelling solo or in a small group, and you don't need air-conditioning, polished rooms, or a pool. The 6am pickup truck alone justifies the rate for anyone serious about Mawi.
Skip Pipes if you want comfort, quiet, air-con, or a yoga schedule. Yoga Searcher is the obvious step up for a slightly broader experience. For private comfort at budget prices, Begadang Backpackers or Kuta Indah Hotel are better fits.
