Kuta Lombok, south Lombok
★ 4.3(540 reviews)
Begadang is a mid-tier hostel in central Kuta Lombok offering air-conditioned dorms from 200,000 IDR with a pool, on-site bar, and noticeably better facilities than Pipes without Yoga Searcher's yoga premium. The crowd is broader and slightly older — surfers, backpackers, and digital nomads mixed together. Rooms are clean and the pool is genuinely nice, but the bar can run loud until midnight and the breakfast is uninspired.
# Begadang Backpackers Kuta Lombok: The Sensible Middle
Begadang opened in 2019 to fill the gap between rough-and-ready Pipes and yoga-focused Yoga Searcher: a mid-priced backpacker option with air-con, a pool, and a sociable but not party-driven vibe. It's now arguably the best all-purpose hostel in central Kuta.
Owned by an Indonesian-Australian couple with previous hostel experience in Bali. The property is a single-storey horseshoe around a central pool deck, with three dorms on one wing, six private rooms on the other, a bar and reception in the middle, and a small kitchen at the back. About 60 beds total.
The crowd is mixed — surfers chasing south coast breaks, backpackers on the standard Indonesia loop, a handful of digital nomads working at the pool tables. Average age 25–35, slightly older than Pipes or Mad Monkey, slightly younger than Yoga Searcher's yoga crowd.
Two dorm options. 8-bed mixed air-con dorm runs 200,000 IDR per bed. 6-bed female-only air-con dorm is 220,000 IDR. Both have privacy curtains, reading lights, USB sockets, and lockers — though the lockers are small enough that a 60-litre backpack won't fully fit (separate luggage storage is available at reception).
Private rooms come in two flavours: standard double with fan and shared bathroom at 380,000 IDR, and double with air-con and ensuite at 500,000–550,000 IDR. The air-con private is the value sweet spot for couples who want a real bed and a real bathroom but don't want to pay hotel prices.
Begadang is on Jalan Raya Kuta, the main inland road through central Kuta, about 600m from the beach. The walk takes 8–10 minutes through town and most of Kuta's restaurants, surf shops, and warungs are within a 5-minute radius. The bus terminal is 200m up the road for connections to Mataram and the airport.
The airport is 25 minutes south by Grab (200,000 IDR). Mawi, Selong Belanak, and Are Guling are 20–35 minutes by scooter. Begadang has a scooter rental partner on-site for 70,000 IDR per day.
The pool is the standout feature for a hostel in this price bracket. It's mid-sized, properly maintained, with sun loungers and a shaded deck where the digital nomads tend to camp during the day. After a morning surf or beach trip, the pool is an actual amenity rather than a sad puddle.
Beds are good. Memory-foam mattresses, fresh sheets, working air-con, USB sockets at every bunk. After a few nights at fan-only places, this feels properly comfortable. The bathroom situation is the unsung win — six bathrooms for the dorm wing means the morning queue rarely tops 5 minutes.
The bar is the main potential downside. It runs from 5pm until around midnight most nights, with music at a sociable rather than party volume. From the back dorms it's audible but manageable; the front dorms next to the bar are noisier and not the spot for early sleepers. Earplugs handle most of it.
Breakfast is the weakest link. Not included in the room rate, runs 60,000–80,000 IDR for fairly average eggs-and-toast or banana pancakes. Most guests skip it and walk to one of the cafes on Jalan Pariwisata — Kenza or Bush Radio do better food for similar money.
The kitchen works for occasional self-catering — gas hob, fridge, basic pots and pans, communal condiments shelf. Useful for breakfast or pasta-style dinners; not really set up for serious cooking.
Wi-Fi is decent in the pool deck and bar areas, weaker in the back dorms. Workable for messaging and basic browsing, not great for video calls.
Book Begadang if you want a comfortable hostel with air-con and a real pool, you're 25–35 and want a sociable but not party atmosphere, and you value bathroom availability and bed quality over having yoga or surf programmes built in.
Skip Begadang if you specifically want yoga (Yoga Searcher), you specifically want surf (Pipes is more surf-focused), or you want full party energy (Mad Monkey on Gili T is better tuned for that). If you want private hotel comfort at similar money, Kuta Indah Hotel or one of the smaller bungalow operations on Pariwisata gives a different experience.
