Gili Trawangan (south side, within Hotel Villa Ombak)
★ 4.5(894 reviews)
Villa Ombak Dive Center is the in-house dive shop attached to Hotel Villa Ombak, one of Gili Trawangan's longest-standing four-star resorts. The operation runs the full PADI course range with resort-style convenience — gear delivered to your room, courses scheduled around hotel activities. Pricing reflects the hotel-attached premium. Best for resort guests; less compelling as a standalone choice.
# Villa Ombak Dive Center: The Honest Review
Villa Ombak Dive Center is the in-house dive operation attached to Hotel Villa Ombak, one of the original four-star resorts on Gili Trawangan and a fixture on the south side beachfront for over twenty years. The dive shop has evolved alongside the hotel and now runs as a full PADI 5-star resort dive center.
The dive center operates under the hotel's umbrella but is staffed by career dive professionals who don't rotate in from front-of-house. Most instructors have been with the operation for 3+ years and several speak two or three European languages. The shop holds PADI 5-star Resort status (one tier below the Instructor Development Centre rating that Blue Marlin holds).
The fundamental positioning is "dive shop for resort guests who want diving without separate planning." Walk-ins from outside the hotel are welcome, but the model is built around the hotel guest experience.
PADI Open Water at Villa Ombak runs over 3 days with the standard 5 dives. Group sizes typically run 4 per divemaster, with smaller ratios in shoulder season. The pacing is moderate — designed to suit resort guests who want diving as part of a relaxed holiday rather than an intensive certification push.
Advanced Open Water is similarly paced. The shop offers a strong elective range including Underwater Photography (cameras available for rent), Wreck (Bounty wreck off Meno), Underwater Naturalist, and Peak Performance Buoyancy.
Where Villa Ombak genuinely stands out is the higher-tier course range. Rescue Diver and Emergency First Response courses run regularly. Divemaster internships are offered with structured 6–8 week programs. PADI Reactivate (the refresher for divers who haven't been in the water in 6+ months) is a small but useful niche they handle well.
Three custom dive boats with hard tops, shaded surface intervals, and proper kit-up benches. Departures at 8:30am, 11am, and 2pm with site selection following standard Gili rotation. Hotel guests get priority on preferred departure times in peak season; walk-ins may be assigned to less popular slots.
Boat capacity is 12 max but typical loadings are 6–10. Surface intervals are comfortable with hotel-quality snacks (fruit, water, occasional biscuits).
Rental gear is mid-tier: well-maintained, in the 2–4 year age range, properly serviced. BCDs and regulators are mostly Mares and Aqualung. Wetsuits are functional 3mm shorties suited to Gili water temperatures.
The convenience layer is the differentiator. Gear can be delivered to your hotel room before a dive day and collected afterwards for rinsing — meaning you don't carry wet gear through the hotel. For divers staying multiple nights, this is genuinely helpful.
Two-tank fun dive runs 1.3 million IDR (≈$83) for non-hotel guests. Hotel guests typically get a 10–15% discount. Open Water is 6 million IDR. Advanced is 5 million IDR. Rescue is 5.5 million IDR. Divemaster (full internship) is 14 million IDR.
Hotel + dive course packages are where the math gets interesting. A 4-night Villa Ombak stay + Open Water course can come in 15–25% below the cost of booking equivalent hotel + non-resort dive course separately. If you were planning to stay at Villa Ombak anyway, the in-house dive shop is the obvious choice.
Villa Ombak Dive Center's strength is convenience and integration with the hotel experience. For resort guests, it's a one-call dive solution with gear delivery and scheduling that respects your hotel activities. For families with mixed diver/non-diver members, the hotel + dive setup works well.
The weakness is standalone competitiveness. If you're staying elsewhere on Gili T and just want a dive shop, you'll get better value from Big Bubble or Trawangan Dive at lower prices, or boutique-grade attention from Vyaha or Gili Divers. Villa Ombak's premium pricing is largely justified by the resort convenience layer that non-guests don't fully benefit from.
Book Villa Ombak if you're staying at Hotel Villa Ombak — the convenience and package pricing make it the obvious choice. Book them if you want a full course range including Rescue, EFR, and Divemaster from a single shop. Book them if you're an older diver or travelling with mobility considerations and want resort-grade accessibility. Book them if you're returning to diving after a long layoff and want the structured PADI Reactivate program.
Skip Villa Ombak if you're staying at a non-affiliated hotel and want best price-to-quality ratio. Skip them if you want boutique technique-focused instruction. Skip them if you're a budget traveller — there are cheaper Gili T options without meaningful safety compromise.
If you're a hotel guest, book the dive course at the same time as the hotel for the package discount. WhatsApp (+62 818 0567 2233) is the fastest contact for non-guest enquiries. Walk-ins for Discover Scuba are usually accepted; multi-day courses need 2–3 days advance notice in peak season.
