Gili Island Hopping Public Boats

The public island-hopping boats are the cheapest and most frequent way to travel between the three Gili islands. These small wooden boats shuttle passengers between Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air throughout the day, following a circular route that connects all three islands. The boats depart from the main harbor area on each island roughly every 30-60 minutes from 8am to 4pm (last boat varies). The standard fare is IDR 25,000-35,000 per person per hop, paid in cash to the boat captain before departure. The journey between any two islands takes 10-20 minutes depending on conditions. The boats are basic wooden outriggers with a roof for shade and bench seating — not luxurious, but perfectly functional. Life jackets are available but not always offered — ask if you want one. The boats can get crowded during peak hours (morning departures) and peak season (July-August, Christmas). In rough conditions (typically June-September when the swell is up), the inter-island boats may be cancelled or delayed. The captains make the call based on conditions, and safety should always come first. If boats are not running, charter options are available at higher prices (IDR 200,000-350,000 per boat). To catch a boat, simply walk to the harbor area on any Gili island and look for the boats loading passengers. There is usually someone calling out the destination. No advance booking is needed or possible. The schedule is informal — boats leave when they have enough passengers or at the scheduled time, whichever comes first. Bring small bills for payment. This is island transport at its most authentic and affordable.
