1 hour flight · IDR 800,000-2,000,000 return
Tip: Faster than ferry but limited destinations on Sumbawa.
For most tourists, skip Sumbawa entirely — Lombok and the Gili Islands offer better tourism infrastructure. Only continue to Sumbawa if you're specifically heading to Lakey Peak (world-class surf) or doing an overland archipelago crossing toward Komodo and Flores. For Komodo trips specifically, fly via Bali to Labuan Bajo instead.
# Lombok to Sumbawa: The Eastward Adventure
Sumbawa is the next island east of Lombok, separated by a narrow strait. Unlike Bali (heavily touristed) or Lombok (growing tourism), Sumbawa has minimal international tourism infrastructure. Most Lombok visitors don't continue east — Sumbawa is for specific niche travelers rather than the standard tourism circuit.
Three reasons Sumbawa isn't on the standard Lombok itinerary:
1. Limited infrastructure: Few hotels, fewer restaurants, less tourism support
2. Language barriers: English even less common than Lombok
3. Better alternatives: Lombok itself has more variety than Sumbawa, and Komodo trips are easier via direct flight from Bali
Surfers: Lakey Peak in Sumbawa is a world-class surf destination. Multiple breaks attract experienced surfers from around the world. This is the main legitimate tourist reason to visit Sumbawa.
Overland travelers: People committed to surface transport through the Indonesian archipelago. The route Lombok → Sumbawa → Flores → Komodo via ferries is an adventure crossing.
Mount Tambora climbers: Tambora is Sumbawa's volcanic peak, the site of the 1815 eruption. Less famous than Rinjani but a real adventure for serious trekkers.
Cultural interest: A small subset of travelers interested in Bima and Sumbawa Besar's traditional cultures.
Public ferry (most common):
Total Lombok-to-Sumbawa landing time: 5-6 hours including drive to port and ferry crossing. Cost: 250-400k IDR per person for the full journey including driver to port.
Domestic flight:
Faster but limited to Bima destination — requires further travel for Lakey Peak (5+ hours by car) or other Sumbawa locations.
Limited but interesting destinations:
Lakey Peak: World-class surf area on Sumbawa's south coast. Multiple breaks for different skill levels. Limited surf camp accommodations. Best months June-October.
Mount Tambora: 2,851m volcano, site of the 1815 supereruption. 4-5 day trek with guides from local villages. Less commercial than Rinjani.
Sumbawa Besar: Regional capital with traditional culture. Limited tourism infrastructure.
Bima: Eastern Sumbawa's main city. Connections to Komodo via flight or ferry.
Pulau Moyo: Small island off Sumbawa's north coast with eco-resorts. Famous for visiting celebrities.
For travelers using Sumbawa as a transit point:
To Flores: Ferry from Sape (east Sumbawa) to Labuan Bajo (Flores), 6-8 hours. From Flores, connections to Komodo dragon tours.
To Komodo direct: Most travelers skip the overland Sumbawa route entirely and fly Bali → Labuan Bajo direct. Much faster and more practical.
For 99% of Lombok visitors, Sumbawa is irrelevant. Skip it unless you're a serious surfer heading to Lakey Peak, an adventurous overland traveler, or a Tambora trekker. For Komodo dragon tours, fly Bali → Labuan Bajo direct rather than overland through Sumbawa.
