# Gili Trawangan Boat Dock: Arrivals and Departures
Gili Trawangan's main boat dock is the central transit point for the island's tourism. Located on the east side of the island, it handles all incoming arrivals from Lombok, Bali, and inter-Gili boats. Most travelers' first and last impression of Gili T happens at this dock, so understanding the layout matters.
Gili T's "boat dock" isn't really a dock in the Western sense — it's a stretch of beach where boats run up onto the sand and passengers walk off into shallow water. There's no concrete pier, no boarding gates, no formal infrastructure. Just boats arriving on sand.
The dock area consists of:
When your boat reaches Gili T:
1. Boat motors slowly toward the beach
2. Crew anchors the boat in shallow water (1-2 meters from shore)
3. Passengers disembark down a wooden plank or jump into ankle-deep water
4. Walk up the beach to the dock area
5. Decide your onward transport (walk, cidomo, bicycle, or porter)
If your accommodation is centrally located (within 15 minutes walking), walking is the simplest option. Most beach-area hotels and restaurants are within easy walking distance of the dock.
Cidomos are Gili T's traditional horse-drawn carts and the only "motorized" transport on the island (the island bans cars and motorbikes). They wait at the dock for arriving passengers.
Fair pricing:
Always negotiate the price BEFORE boarding. Cidomo drivers will quote inflated prices to obviously-tourist arrivals — start at 50,000 IDR for short trips and work up.
Animal welfare note: Some travelers have ethical concerns about horse cart use, particularly during heat or with overloaded carts. Choose drivers with horses that look healthy and well-fed. The Gili Eco Trust has worked to improve cidomo welfare standards.
Gili T's bicycle rental shops are concentrated near the dock. Daily rates run 30,000-50,000 IDR, sometimes 75,000-100,000 IDR for better-quality bikes. For multi-day stays, bicycle rental is convenient — you can transport luggage in the basket or strap to the rack.
The island is small (3 km long) and flat, making cycling easy for most fitness levels. The main road around the island is sand-and-dirt, not paved.
Departing from Gili T, the same dock handles all outgoing boats. Pre-book tickets at your accommodation or at one of the boat ticket offices the day before departure.
Common departures:
For early-morning departures, arrive at the dock 30 minutes before scheduled time. Boats sometimes leave a few minutes early if full.
1. Wearing inappropriate footwear: You'll get your feet wet disembarking. Wear flip-flops or be prepared to remove shoes.
2. Letting porters grab bags without negotiating: Confirm porter fee before they take your luggage.
3. Using the first cidomo without negotiating: Always negotiate fare upfront.
4. Not knowing your accommodation location: Have your hotel name, address, or location pin ready.
5. Carrying valuables in checked luggage: Boat luggage isn't always handled gently.
