AirAsia via KUL is the default choice for most Delhi travelers — cheapest at INR 28,000-50,000 return with single-airline protection. Air India + Scoot via Singapore is the premium option with better service quality on the long leg. Consider combining Bali and Lombok since both are accessible from the same Southeast Asia transit hubs.
# Delhi to Lombok: North India's Route to Indonesia
Delhi is India's primary international air hub with excellent connectivity to Southeast Asia, though Lombok specifically requires one or two stops. For Delhi-based travelers, Lombok is a genuine long-haul journey at 11-16 hours total travel time, making it a dedicated 10-14 day vacation destination rather than a quick getaway.
Via Kuala Lumpur (KUL): The budget standard. AirAsia X flies DEL-KUL daily (5.5h), connecting to AirAsia's KUL-LOP direct (3h). Total 11-13 hours with AirAsia through-ticketing protection. Fares INR 28,000-50,000 return.
Via Singapore (SIN): The premium option. Air India or Singapore Airlines operate DEL-SIN with full-service meals, better seats, and vegetarian options. SIN-LOP via Scoot completes the journey. Total 11-14 hours. Fares INR 32,000-60,000 return.
Via Bangkok (BKK): Some multi-airline bookings route via Bangkok + KUL or SIN. Less efficient than direct KL or Singapore routing.
Delhi has slightly better Southeast Asia connectivity than Mumbai:
The tradeoff is that Delhi is farther from Southeast Asia than Mumbai by about 45 minutes flight time. For Lombok specifically, both Mumbai and Delhi have similar total journey times of 11-14 hours via comparable routings.
Indian passport holders need Indonesian visa on arrival (VOA) at LOP for 35 USD. Payment in cash (USD strongly preferred) or by card at the VOA counter. Valid for 30 days, extendable once at Mataram immigration office.
Required documentation:
Bring minimum 100 USD cash for VOA plus initial airport expenses. Indian debit/credit cards work at most Indonesian ATMs but with foreign transaction fees.
North Indian travelers have specific dietary needs that affect Lombok trip planning:
Pure vegetarian dining options:
Jain-strict dining: Very limited. Plan to pack backup snacks and communicate requirements at booking for hotels and trek operators.
Alcohol: Lombok is Muslim-majority with alcohol available only in tourist areas (Gili Trawangan, Kuta, Senggigi). Most restaurants outside tourism zones don't serve alcohol.
