Rice terrace dining in Tetebatu's green highlands

Warung Taman is a hidden gem in Tetebatu that perfectly captures the magic of this highland village. The restaurant is set in a lush tropical garden surrounded by rice terraces on all sides, with views stretching across emerald-green paddies to the forested slopes of Mount Rinjani. The setting alone is worth the visit, but the food more than holds its own. The kitchen is run by a local family who serve traditional Sasak dishes alongside Indonesian classics, all prepared with ingredients sourced from the surrounding farms and their own garden. The nasi goreng uses rice harvested from the paddies you are looking at — you literally cannot get more farm-to-table than this. The ayam betutu (slow-cooked chicken in banana leaf with a complex spice paste) requires two hours to prepare, so order it when you arrive and explore the rice terraces while you wait. The gado-gado is exceptional — fresh vegetables from the garden with a rich, hand-ground peanut sauce. The fresh juices feature tropical fruits picked from trees on the property. Prices are remarkably low even by Lombok standards: most dishes IDR 15,000-30,000. The warung also offers cooking classes where you can learn to make Sasak dishes from scratch, including a trip to the local market — IDR 200,000 per person for a half-day session. WiFi does not exist here, and that is part of the charm. Opening hours are flexible — roughly 9am to 8pm, but they stay open later if guests are still eating. The family can also arrange rice terrace walks and waterfall hikes with a local guide.
