Warung Muslim Mataram is the kind of place that most tourists never find but wish they had. Tucked away on a side street in Mataram's Ampenan district, this humble warung serves authentic Sasak home cooking at prices that make tourist-area restaurants seem absurd. The specialty is ayam taliwang — Lombok's signature dish of grilled chicken coated in a fiery chili-shallot-shrimp paste marinade that will blow your head off in the best possible way. Equally excellent is the plecing kangkung (water spinach with tomato-chili sambal), the sate rembiga (spicy minced beef satay unique to Lombok), and the ares (young banana trunk curry). Everything is halal. The portions are huge and the price is almost comically low: a full meal with rice, two sides, and a drink rarely exceeds IDR 20,000. The warung is basic — plastic tables and chairs, a glass display case of pre-cooked dishes, fluorescent lighting — but the food is world-class Sasak cuisine. The owner's family has been cooking these recipes for generations. Very few staff speak English, but pointing at what you want works perfectly. Opening hours are roughly 10am to 8pm, closed during Friday prayers. This is essential eating for anyone who wants to understand Lombok's culinary identity beyond the tourist bubble.
