Pre-trek carbo-loading with Rinjani valley views

Pesona Rinjani Restaurant is the largest and most reliable eating option in Sembalun, strategically positioned at the edge of the village with sweeping views across the valley to Mount Rinjani's peak. Most trekkers pass through here either the night before or the morning of their Rinjani trek, and the kitchen is geared for hungry hikers — portions are enormous and heavily carb-loaded. The nasi goreng comes on a plate the size of a hubcap and is genuinely good: proper wok heat, fresh vegetables, and a generous serving of chicken or egg. The mie goreng is equally massive. For something more traditionally Sasak, try the ayam bakar (grilled chicken) with steamed rice and three different sambals — it is hearty, flavorful, and the perfect pre-trek fuel. Breakfast options include banana pancakes, toast with eggs, and a filling Indonesian breakfast plate. The coffee is basic Lombok kopi (sweet, strong, with grounds settling at the bottom) but exactly what you need at 5am before a dawn start on the mountain. Prices are low: most dishes IDR 20,000-40,000. The restaurant can also pack lunch boxes for trekkers — nasi bungkus (wrapped rice with sides) for IDR 15,000 each. The owner doubles as an informal trek information center and can connect you with licensed guides if you have not arranged one. WiFi is spotty. The valley view from the terrace at sunset is magnificent — Rinjani glows golden as the light fades. Open 5am to 9pm.
