Lombok Dry Season Guide: May to September
Lombok's dry season runs from May to September with minimal rainfall, temperatures of 24-31 degrees Celsius, low humidity, and calm seas. This is the best time for diving (20-30m visibility), Rinjani trekking, and beach activities. July-August is peak season with highest prices and crowds. May, June, and September offer identical weather with fewer tourists and better value.
Dry Season Overview {#overview}
Lombok's dry season spans May through September, delivering the island at its most accessible and photogenic. Skies are consistently clear, seas are calm and turquoise, humidity drops to comfortable levels, and every outdoor activity is at its best. This is when Lombok earns its reputation as one of Indonesia's most beautiful islands.
The dry season is driven by the Australian continental high-pressure system that pushes dry air northward across the Lesser Sunda Islands. The result is five months of reliable sunshine with minimal disruption. For travelers who want guaranteed good weather, this is the window.
The trade-off is predictable: peak season means peak prices and peak crowds, particularly during July and August when European and Australian school holidays converge on the island. But "crowded" in Lombok is still far less intense than Bali — you will never struggle to find an empty stretch of beach on the south coast.
Weather in Detail {#weather-detail}
### Temperature
Daytime highs range from 28-31 degrees C (82-88 degrees F) across the dry season, with July being slightly cooler than surrounding months. Nighttime lows drop to 22-24 degrees C — pleasant sleeping temperatures, especially with a fan or open window.
At altitude, temperatures drop significantly. Rinjani's crater rim (2,641m) can see nighttime temperatures of 5-10 degrees C, and the summit (3,726m) drops to near freezing. Pack warm layers for trekking.
### Humidity
Dry season humidity ranges from 60-75%, significantly more comfortable than wet season's 80-95%. You will still sweat in the midday heat, but the air does not feel oppressive. Coastal areas benefit from sea breezes that further reduce the perceived humidity.
### Rainfall
May: 3-5 rainy days, brief showers. June through August: 0-2 rainy days per month, negligible accumulation. September: 3-5 rainy days, returning moisture. When it does rain in dry season, it is typically a brief 15-30 minute shower rather than the sustained downpours of wet season.
### Ocean Conditions
Seas are calm from May through September, with swells on the exposed south coast providing consistent surf conditions without the dangerous power of wet season storms. Diving visibility peaks at 20-30 meters — you can see across entire reef systems. Boat transfers between islands are smooth and cancellations due to weather are extremely rare.
### UV Index
The equatorial sun is powerful year-round, but dry season's clear skies mean maximum UV exposure. The UV index regularly hits 11+ (extreme) between 10 AM and 2 PM. Apply SPF 50 sunscreen every 2 hours, wear a hat, and take shade breaks during the middle of the day. Sunburn happens faster than you expect, even on overcast-feeling days.
Best Dry Season Activities {#activities}
### Diving and Snorkeling
Dry season is the premier time for underwater exploration around Lombok. Visibility around the Gili Islands reaches 25-30 meters — you can see entire reef walls, manta rays, and turtle feeding grounds in crystal clarity. Water temperature is 26-28 degrees C, comfortable for extended dives without a thick wetsuit.
The southwest Gili dive sites (Shark Point, Manta Point, Deep Turbo) are at their best. Macro photography conditions at Bounty Wreck and Hans Reef are excellent. Snorkeling around Gili Trawangan and Gili Air is spectacular with calm, clear water over coral gardens teeming with tropical fish.
### Rinjani Trekking
June through August is the optimal window for climbing Mount Rinjani. Trails are dry and firm, visibility from the crater rim extends to Bali on clear mornings, and the summit push is not complicated by ice, fog, or waterlogged paths. The national park is fully open and operating at capacity.
Book Rinjani treks 2-4 weeks ahead during peak season — popular operators fill up. The 2-day/1-night trek to the crater rim is manageable for fit travelers. The 3-day/2-night trek adds the summit and Segara Anak crater lake.
### Surfing
South coast breaks fire consistently from May through September. Desert Point produces world-class left-handers when conditions align — long, hollow barrels that attract surfers from around the globe. Gerupuk Bay offers multiple breaks for different levels: Don Don for intermediates, Inside Gerupuk for beginners, and Outside Gerupuk for advanced riders.
Selong Belanak is the premier beginner surf beach during dry season — gentle, consistent whitewash waves on a sandy beach with no reef. Board rental and lessons are available on the sand.
### Beach Days
Every beach in Lombok is at its best during dry season. The south coast string — Kuta Beach, Selong Belanak, Mawun, Tanjung Aan, Tampah — offers different experiences from white sand turquoise lagoons to dramatic cliff-backed coves. The lack of rain means reliable full-day beach outings without watching the sky for incoming storms.
### Island Hopping
Calm seas make island hopping reliable and pleasant. Day trips to the Secret Gilis (Gili Nanggu, Gili Kedis, Gili Sudak) off Lombok's southwest coast are beautiful in dry season conditions. Snorkeling stops en route offer clear-water reef encounters.
Managing Peak Season Crowds {#crowds}
### Where Crowds Concentrate
The crowds in Lombok during peak season (July-August) are concentrated in specific areas:
- Gili Trawangan: The busiest place in the Lombok area during peak season. Bars, restaurants, and dive shops are packed. Book accommodation 4-6 weeks ahead.
- Kuta Lombok: The main tourist town gets busier but never feels overwhelmed. The numerous beaches distribute visitors effectively.
- Selong Belanak: The most popular beach fills up during midday. Arrive before 10 AM or after 3 PM for space.
### Where Crowds Are Light
Even during peak season, these areas remain uncrowded:
- Mawun Beach (short drive from Kuta, never crowded)
- East Lombok coast (rarely visited by tourists)
- North Lombok waterfalls (midweek visits are practically solitary)
- Gili Air and Gili Meno (fraction of Gili T's visitors)
- South coast beaches beyond Selong Belanak (Semeti, Mawi, Tampah)
### Beat the Crowds
- Visit popular beaches before 10 AM or after 3 PM
- Choose Gili Air or Gili Meno over Gili Trawangan
- Explore the south coast by scooter — most tourists cluster at 3-4 main beaches
- Do Rinjani at the start or end of dry season (May or September) rather than July-August
- Eat at warungs rather than tourist restaurants for an uncrowded, authentic experience
Dry Season Packing {#packing}
Dry season packing is simpler than wet season — you can leave the rain gear behind (though a light jacket for evening is useful).
Essentials:
- Light, breathable clothing (fewer layers needed than wet season)
- Strong sunscreen SPF 50 (the dry-season sun is relentless)
- Sunglasses and hat
- Reef shoes for rocky beaches
- Insect repellent (mosquitoes are fewer but still present)
- Reusable water bottle (dehydration is the main dry-season health risk)
- Light jacket or hoodie for evenings and air-conditioned transport
For Rinjani: Add warm layers, trekking boots, headlamp, and a sleeping bag liner. Nighttime temperatures at altitude are cold even in peak dry season.
Not needed: Waterproof jacket (save the pack space), heavy footwear for non-trekkers, excessive clothing (laundry is cheap and fast-drying in the dry air).
Month-by-Month Tips {#month-tips}
### May — The Smart Traveler's Choice
Dry season conditions establish but crowds have not arrived. Prices are slightly below peak rates. Accommodation is readily available without advance booking. The weather is essentially identical to July but with 50% fewer tourists. Dive visibility is climbing toward its peak. South coast surf season is underway.
### June — Peak Conditions Begin
The weather is perfect and European visitors begin arriving. Book accommodation 2-3 weeks ahead for popular places. Prices reach peak rates. Rinjani is in prime condition. Diving visibility hits its stride. The atmosphere is lively in tourist areas without being overwhelming.
### July — The Busiest Month
Peak everything — weather, crowds, and prices. Accommodation should be booked 4-6 weeks ahead for popular properties. Gili Trawangan is at capacity. South coast surf is consistent and powerful. Rinjani summit views are at their clearest. If the budget allows, this is the most reliably excellent month weather-wise.
### August — Sustained Peak
Similar to July with slightly fewer European visitors (end of school holidays in some countries) replaced by Australian visitors (peak of their school holidays). Indonesian Independence Day (August 17) brings local celebrations — parades, competitions, and community events worth experiencing. Desert Point surf is at its seasonal best.
### September — The Other Smart Choice
Dry conditions continue but crowds visibly thin. Accommodation prices start to dip. Last-minute bookings become possible again. Diving visibility remains excellent. Rinjani trek availability improves. This is arguably the best overall value month — dry season quality at near-shoulder-season prices. The only caveat: late September may see the first scattered showers signaling the approaching wet season.
