How to Get to Lombok: Every Route from Abroad and Within Indonesia

Practical11 min readLast updated: April 2026

You can reach Lombok by flying into Lombok International Airport (LOP) with direct flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, and Bali, or by sea from Bali via fast boat (1.5-2.5 hours, 350-600K IDR) or public ferry (4-5 hours, 46K IDR). Most international travelers fly to Bali first and then connect by a short 30-minute flight or fast boat to Lombok.

Overview: Routes to Lombok {#overview}

Lombok sits east of Bali across the 35-kilometer Lombok Strait. Despite being less developed than its famous neighbor, the island is well-connected by air and sea. There are essentially four ways to reach Lombok: direct international flights, domestic flights from Indonesian cities, boat crossings from Bali, and overland-plus-ferry routes from Java or Sumbawa.

Your best route depends on where you are coming from, your budget, and whether you plan to visit Bali as well. Here is a quick summary before diving into the details:

| Route | Travel Time | Cost Range | Best For |

|-------|------------|------------|----------|

| Direct international flight | 2.5-5 hr | $80-400 USD | Singapore, KL travelers |

| Domestic flight (Jakarta/Surabaya) | 1.5-2.5 hr | $40-120 USD | Speed from Java |

| Flight from Bali | 30 min | $35-100 USD | Reliability, south Lombok |

| Fast boat from Bali | 1.5-2.5 hr | $22-40 USD | Gili Islands access |

| Public ferry from Bali | 4-5 hr | $3 USD | Ultra-budget, vehicles |

| Sumbawa ferry (east) | 1.5 hr | $2-5 USD | Overland travelers |

International Flights to Lombok {#international-flights}

Lombok International Airport (IATA: LOP), officially named Bandara Internasional Zainuddin Abdul Madjid, opened in 2011 and handles a growing number of international routes. The airport is located in Praya, on the south-central coast of the island, about 25 minutes from Kuta Lombok.

### Current International Routes (2026)

Singapore (SIN to LOP) — Scoot operates 3-4 weekly flights. Flight time is approximately 2.5 hours. Fares range from $80-200 SGD one way depending on booking timing and season. This is the most popular direct international route and has been running reliably for years.

Kuala Lumpur (KUL to LOP) — AirAsia flies this route 3-4 times per week. Flight time is about 3.5 hours. Fares start from 200-400 MYR one way. Good option for Malaysian travelers or anyone connecting through KL.

Australia (seasonal) — During peak season (June-September), charter flights occasionally run from Perth and other Australian cities. These are typically part of surf or dive packages rather than scheduled commercial service. Check with Australian tour operators specializing in Indonesia.

Note on expansion: LOP has been adding routes gradually. By the time you read this, new connections may have launched. Check Google Flights or Skyscanner for current options from your origin city.

### The Bali Connection Option

The reality is that most international travelers still route through Bali. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Bali has direct flights from dozens of cities worldwide, including major hubs like Sydney, Melbourne, Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Mumbai, Dubai, and most Southeast Asian capitals. If you cannot find a direct flight to Lombok or the fare is significantly higher, flying to Bali and connecting onward is usually the practical choice.

Domestic Flights Within Indonesia {#domestic-flights}

If you are already in Indonesia, multiple airlines connect Jakarta, Surabaya, and other cities to Lombok daily.

### From Jakarta

Lion Air and Wings Air — The budget workhorses with 3-5 daily flights. Flight time is approximately 2 hours from Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta Airport (CGK). Fares range from 600,000 to 1,200,000 IDR one way. Book through Traveloka for the best prices on domestic routes.

Garuda Indonesia — 1-2 daily flights with full-service experience. Fares from 900,000 to 2,000,000 IDR. Worth the premium during peak season when budget carriers are packed.

Citilink — Garuda's low-cost subsidiary with competitive pricing. 1-2 daily flights at prices similar to Lion Air but generally better on-time performance.

### From Surabaya

Surabaya (SUB) in East Java has multiple daily flights to Lombok, taking about 45 minutes. Fares start from 400,000 IDR one way. This is a popular route for domestic business travelers and Javanese tourists.

### From Bali

The Bali to Lombok flight is covered in detail in our dedicated guide. In brief: 30 minutes, 500K-1.5M IDR, multiple daily departures on Lion Air, Garuda, and Citilink.

### Booking Tips for Domestic Flights

Use Traveloka or Tiket.com (Indonesian online travel agencies) rather than international platforms. They consistently show lower prices for domestic Indonesian flights because they have direct deals with local carriers. The apps work in English and accept international credit cards.

Book 2-3 weeks ahead for the best prices. During peak season (July-August, Christmas/New Year, Eid al-Fitr), book 4-6 weeks ahead as flights fill up and prices spike.

Getting to Lombok via Bali {#via-bali}

This is the most common route for international travelers and is covered extensively in our Bali to Lombok guide. Here is the summary:

Flight from Bali — 30-minute hop, 500K-1.5M IDR, arrives at LOP Airport in south-central Lombok. Best for: speed, reliability, south Lombok destinations.

Fast boat from Bali — 1.5-2.5 hours from Padang Bai, Serangan, or Sanur. 350-600K IDR. Arrives at Bangsal/Gili Islands in northwest Lombok. Best for: Gili Island travelers, scenic crossing, moderate budget.

Public ferry — 4-5 hours from Padang Bai to Lembar Port. 46,000 IDR. Best for: ultra-budget travelers, those bringing vehicles.

Each option delivers you to a different part of Lombok, so your choice should partly depend on your final destination. If heading to Kuta Lombok or the south coast, fly. If heading to the Gili Islands, take a fast boat. If heading to Mataram or Senggigi, either works.

From Java: Overland and Ferry Routes {#from-java}

Adventurous travelers crossing Java overland can reach Lombok via the eastern tip of Java. The route is: Surabaya to Banyuwangi (5-6 hours by bus or train), ferry from Ketapang to Gilimanuk in Bali (45 minutes, 8,000 IDR), cross Bali overland to Padang Bai (4-5 hours), then ferry or fast boat to Lombok.

This is the longest route but also the cheapest, potentially costing under 200,000 IDR total from Surabaya to Lombok. Budget travelers and overland enthusiasts sometimes take this route as part of a larger Java-Bali-Lombok trip. The total journey takes 15-20 hours with connections, so it is best broken into segments with overnight stops.

Alternatively, from Surabaya you can simply fly direct to Lombok in 45 minutes for 400-600K IDR. Unless you are committed to overland travel, flying from Surabaya is overwhelmingly more practical.

From Sumbawa and Eastern Indonesia {#from-east}

Travelers heading west from Flores, Komodo, or Sumbawa reach Lombok via:

Poto Tano to Kayangan Ferry — This is the main crossing from Sumbawa. Ferries run every 1-2 hours, take approximately 1.5 hours, and cost about 25,000 IDR per person. The ferry arrives at Kayangan Port on Lombok's east coast, from where it is about 2.5 hours to Mataram or 3 hours to Kuta Lombok.

Flights from Bima or Labuan Bajo — Wings Air operates flights from Bima (Sumbawa) and Labuan Bajo (Flores/Komodo gateway) to Lombok. These are small turboprop flights that can be unreliable but save significant overland time.

The Sumbawa ferry route is popular with overland travelers doing the "Lombok to Flores" route in reverse, especially those who have visited Komodo National Park and are working their way west.

Which Route Is Best for You? {#best-route}

International traveler, Lombok only: Fly direct to LOP if a route exists from your city. Otherwise, fly to Bali and connect by 30-minute flight.

International traveler, Bali + Lombok: Fly to Bali, explore Bali, then cross to Lombok by fast boat (if heading to Gilis) or flight (if heading south).

Backpacker on a budget: Consider the overland route through Java and Bali, using public ferries. Total transport cost from Jakarta to Lombok can be under $20 USD if you take buses and ferries throughout.

Domestic traveler from Jakarta/Surabaya: Fly direct. Fares are competitive and the time savings are enormous compared to overland alternatives.

Coming from eastern Indonesia: Take the Sumbawa ferry or fly from Labuan Bajo/Bima. This is the most common route for travelers finishing a Komodo trip.

Arrival Tips and First Steps {#arrival-tips}

No matter how you arrive, here are the things to sort out immediately:

SIM card: Buy a Telkomsel or XL SIM at the airport or port. Telkomsel has the best coverage across Lombok, including rural areas where other networks drop out. A tourist SIM with 15-25 GB of data costs 100-150K IDR. You need your passport to register.

Cash: ATMs are available at Lombok airport and in Mataram, Senggigi, and Kuta Lombok. Withdraw Indonesian Rupiah immediately — many places outside tourist areas are cash-only. BCA, BNI, and Mandiri ATMs have the best exchange rates and highest withdrawal limits (typically 2.5-3 million IDR per transaction).

Transport from arrival point: Pre-arrange a pickup through your accommodation if possible. This eliminates the hassle of negotiating with taxi touts at ports and ensures a fair price. If your accommodation does not offer pickup, use the official taxi counters at the airport or walk away from port dock areas to find better prices.

Grab app: Download Grab before arriving. It works in Mataram, the airport area, and sporadically in Kuta Lombok and Senggigi. Prices are typically 20-40% lower than negotiated taxi fares. However, driver availability outside Mataram is limited, so do not rely on it exclusively.

Time zone: Lombok is in WITA (Central Indonesian Time), UTC+8 — the same as Bali, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur, but one hour ahead of Jakarta. If you are flying from Jakarta, set your watch forward one hour.

Weather check: If arriving by boat, check sea conditions. During wet season (November-March), fast boat cancellations are common. Have a backup plan (fly instead) if your boat is cancelled due to rough seas. The website or WhatsApp of your boat operator will have the most current information.

The first hour on Lombok sets the tone for your trip. Have a SIM card, cash, and transport sorted, and everything else falls into place naturally.
