Gili Islands Transport: Bikes, Boats, Horse Carts & Island Hopping

Practical8 min readLast updated: April 2026

The Gili Islands are car-free and scooter-free. You get around by bicycle (50,000-70,000 IDR/day rental), walking, cidomo horse carts (50,000-150,000 IDR per trip), or island-hopping boats (15,000-50,000 IDR between islands). Gili Trawangan can be circled by bike in 1.5 hours, Gili Air in 1 hour, and Gili Meno in 45 minutes.

Why the Gilis Are Car-Free {#car-free}

The three Gili Islands — Trawangan, Air, and Meno — are among the few places in Southeast Asia where motorized land transport is banned. No cars, no motorcycles, no scooters. This is not a recent eco-tourism initiative but a longstanding island tradition maintained by local agreement and regulation.

The result is an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Indonesia. The loudest sound on the road is a bicycle bell or the clip-clop of a cidomo horse. The air smells of frangipani rather than exhaust. You move at the pace of a gentle pedal or an unhurried walk. After the sensory overload of Bali or the busy roads of mainland Lombok, the Gilis feel like another world.

The ban is practical as well as aesthetic. The islands are tiny — Gili Trawangan, the largest, is only 3 km long and 2 km wide. There is genuinely no need for motor vehicles. A bicycle or your own feet can reach any point on any island within minutes.

Bicycle Rental: The Best Way Around {#bicycles}

Bicycles are the primary transport on all three Gili Islands. Rental shops and accommodations offer them everywhere, and riding a beach cruiser down sandy paths with ocean views on both sides is one of the quintessential Gili experiences.

### Rental Details

| Bike Type | Daily Rate | Availability |

|-----------|-----------|--------------|

| Single-speed cruiser | 50,000-70,000 IDR | Everywhere |

| Multi-speed bike | 70,000-100,000 IDR | Some shops |

| Electric bike | 100,000-150,000 IDR | Limited |

| Fat-tire beach bike | 80,000-120,000 IDR | Growing availability |

Most rentals are single-speed beach cruisers with coaster brakes (backpedal to stop). They are basic but perfectly suited to the flat terrain. A basket on the front holds your day bag and water bottle.

### Island Circumference by Bike

  • Gili Trawangan: 7 km perimeter, approximately 1-1.5 hours to circle (with stops)
  • Gili Air: 5 km perimeter, approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour
  • Gili Meno: 4 km perimeter, approximately 30-45 minutes

These times include casual stops for photos and beach detours. Pure riding time is much shorter.

### Riding Conditions

The paths on the Gili Islands are a mix of compacted sand, concrete, and loose sand. Most are rideable, but some stretches — particularly on the west and north sides of each island — are deep, loose sand where you will need to walk your bike.

Gili Trawangan has the best-developed path network, with most of the east side (the tourist strip) paved or well-compacted. The west side is quieter, wilder, and sandier.

Gili Air has good paths on the east and south sides, with the north side being more challenging due to sand.

Gili Meno has the most undeveloped paths. Expect to walk your bike through sandy stretches, particularly on the north and west sides. The island is small enough that this is not a major issue.

### Tips

  • Lock your bike when leaving it unattended. Theft is uncommon but not unknown. Most rentals include a basic lock.
  • Ride slowly on shared paths, especially on the east side of Gili T where pedestrians, cidomo, and cyclists share narrow lanes.
  • Avoid riding at night without a light. Paths are unlit and other cyclists and pedestrians are hard to see.
  • Flat tires are common from thorns and coral fragments. Most rental shops will fix a flat for free or a small charge. Carry the shop's number in your phone.

Walking the Islands {#walking}

Every point on every Gili Island is within walking distance. Walking is free, healthy, and the best way to discover hidden corners — that secluded beach bar on the quiet side of Gili Air, the sea turtle nesting area on Gili Meno, the sunset point on Gili T's west coast.

### Walking Times

| Route | Approx. Time |

|-------|-------------|

| Gili T full circuit | 2-3 hours |

| Gili Air full circuit | 1.5-2 hours |

| Gili Meno full circuit | 1-1.5 hours |

| Gili T east strip (harbor to north end) | 20-30 minutes |

| Gili Air harbor to west side | 15-20 minutes |

### When Walking Beats Cycling

  • Short distances on the east-side tourist strips (most restaurants, shops, and dive centers are within a few hundred meters)
  • Sandy west-side paths where you would have to walk the bike anyway
  • At night when cycling is less safe due to unlit paths
  • After drinking — the Gilis are famous for their nightlife (Gili T especially), and riding a bike after cocktails on sandy paths is a reliably bad idea

Cidomo Horse Carts {#cidomo}

Cidomo are small, colorfully decorated horse-drawn carts unique to Lombok and the Gili Islands. On the car-free Gilis, they serve as the islands' taxi service.

### How They Work

Cidomo wait near boat landings and at busy intersections on the tourist strip. Wave one down or approach a waiting driver. State your destination, agree on a price, climb in, and enjoy the ride. The cart seats 2-4 people comfortably, with luggage on the floor or on the back platform.

### Pricing

| Trip | Approximate Price |

|------|------------------|

| Harbor to nearby accommodation | 50,000-100,000 IDR |

| Cross-island (Gili T east to west) | 100,000-150,000 IDR |

| Short hop (few hundred meters) | 50,000 IDR |

Prices are per trip, not per person. Negotiate before boarding.

### When to Use a Cidomo

  • Arriving with luggage — the most common use. After stepping off the boat with your backpack, a cidomo to your accommodation saves dragging bags through sand.
  • Long distances on Gili T — crossing the island from east to west is a reasonable trek with luggage or in the heat of the day.
  • Mobility limitations — for travelers who have difficulty walking long distances or cycling.

### Animal Welfare Note

There has been ongoing debate about the welfare of cidomo horses on the Gili Islands. In recent years, local organizations and international groups have worked to improve conditions — providing shade shelters, limiting working hours, and ensuring adequate water. Some cidomo horses are well-cared-for; others less so. If this is a concern for you, choose a cidomo whose horse appears healthy (good weight, clear eyes, no visible sores) and avoid overloading the cart. Some travelers prefer not to use cidomo for ethical reasons and walk or cycle exclusively.

Island-Hopping Boats {#island-hopping}

Visiting all three Gili Islands is easy thanks to regular island-hopping boat services. Whether you are based on Gili T and want to spend a day on quiet Gili Meno, or staying on Gili Air and wanting to experience Gili T's nightlife, inter-island boats make it simple.

### Public Island-Hopping Boats

Public boats run a roughly circular route connecting all three islands several times daily. The typical route is Gili T → Gili Meno → Gili Air → Gili T (or the reverse).

| Route | Price | Duration |

|-------|-------|----------|

| Gili T → Gili Meno | 15,000-25,000 IDR | 10 minutes |

| Gili Meno → Gili Air | 15,000-25,000 IDR | 10 minutes |

| Gili T → Gili Air | 25,000-50,000 IDR | 15-20 minutes |

| Gili Air → Gili T | 25,000-50,000 IDR | 15-20 minutes |

Boats depart from the harbor areas on the east side of each island. Look for the small ticket offices near the boat landing. Departures start around 8:00 AM and run until approximately 4:00 PM.

Like mainland Lombok public boats, these depart when enough passengers have gathered. During peak season, this is quick (every 20-30 minutes from Gili T). During quiet periods, you might wait 30-60 minutes.

### Private Boat Charter

For maximum flexibility, charter a private boat between islands. Prices range from 200,000 to 400,000 IDR for a boat that seats 4-8 people. This is useful for groups, for reaching Gili Meno directly (which has fewer public boat connections), or for traveling outside public boat hours.

Arrange charters at the harbor areas or through your accommodation. Snorkeling charter boats can also drop you off on another island as part of a half-day trip.

### Island-Hopping Day Trips

A popular approach is to base yourself on one island and day-trip to the others:

Based on Gili T: Take a morning boat to Gili Meno for a few hours of quiet beach time, then hop to Gili Air for lunch and a village walk, and return to Gili T by late afternoon.

Based on Gili Air: Morning boat to Gili Meno for snorkeling and the turtle sanctuary, then to Gili T for an afternoon of shopping and an early dinner before returning.

The total boat cost for a three-island day is approximately 50,000-100,000 IDR, making it one of Indonesia's best-value mini-adventures.

Getting to and from Mainland Lombok {#to-mainland}

### From the Gilis to Bangsal

Public boats from each Gili Island back to Bangsal Harbor on mainland Lombok run from approximately 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Tickets cost 15,000-25,000 IDR, matching the prices from Bangsal to the Gilis. Buy tickets at the small offices near the harbor on each island.

### From the Gilis to Teluk Nara / Senggigi

Several speedboat operators run services from the Gili Islands to Teluk Nara or directly to Senggigi. Prices are 85,000-150,000 IDR per person. These are faster and more comfortable than the Bangsal public boats and deliver you closer to Senggigi hotels.

### From the Gilis to Bali

Fast boats from the Gili Islands back to Bali (Padang Bai, Serangan, or Sanur) depart between 8:00 and 9:30 AM daily. Same operators as the outbound trip (Eka Jaya, BlueWater, Gili Getaway, Scoot). Book return tickets at island offices at least one day ahead during peak season.

### From the Gilis to Lombok Airport

There is no direct boat to the airport. The route is: boat to Bangsal (15-25 min), then taxi to Lombok airport (2 hours, 350-450K IDR). Total travel time: approximately 2.5-3 hours. Some shuttle services offer combined boat-plus-car transfers for convenience — ask at your accommodation.

Allow generous time for this connection. If you have a flight, add at least an hour of buffer to account for boat delays and road conditions.
