ATMs in Lombok: Locations, Fees, Limits & Money Tips

Practical8 min readLast updated: February 2026

ATMs are widely available in Lombok's main towns: Mataram, Kuta Lombok, Senggigi, Praya, and the airport. BCA ATMs offer the best exchange rates with max withdrawal of 1,250,000-2,500,000 IDR per transaction. BNI and Mandiri are also reliable. Always decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at ATMs to avoid 3-5% markup. ATMs are scarce in rural areas and the Gili Islands.

ATM Overview for Visitors {#overview}

Cash is still king in Lombok. While card payment is growing in tourist areas, the majority of transactions — local food, transport, market shopping, small shops, entrance fees — are cash-only. Having Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) in your wallet is essential for a smooth trip.

ATMs are your primary source of local currency. They are widely available in populated areas, accept most international bank cards, and provide a better exchange rate than airport money changers. However, ATMs in Lombok have quirks — lower withdrawal limits than you might be used to, occasional outages, and scarce availability in rural areas.

### Essential ATM Facts

  • Currency: All Lombok ATMs dispense Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)
  • Denominations: Most machines dispense 50,000 and 100,000 IDR notes
  • Networks: Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus, Plus are widely supported
  • Languages: ATM interfaces are available in English at major banks
  • Hours: ATMs in bank lobbies are accessible during bank hours only. Standalone ATMs and those at minimarkets are 24/7
  • Card skimming: Use ATMs in well-lit, indoor locations (bank lobbies, minimarkets) to minimize risk

Best Banks for Foreign Cards {#best-banks}

### BCA (Bank Central Asia)

The top choice for foreign visitors. BCA consistently offers the best exchange rates and has the widest network of ATMs across Indonesia.

  • Max withdrawal: 1,250,000 IDR per transaction (some newer machines: 2,500,000 IDR)
  • Foreign card fee: ATM may charge 0 — your home bank charges its own fee
  • Exchange rate: Among the best available
  • ATM locations: In all major towns, airport, shopping areas

The main downside of BCA ATMs is the lower per-transaction limit on older machines. You may need 2-3 transactions to get enough cash for a few days, which means multiple home-bank fees if your bank charges per transaction.

### BNI (Bank Negara Indonesia)

The best for large withdrawals. BNI ATMs consistently allow 2,500,000 IDR per transaction, reducing the number of transactions needed.

  • Max withdrawal: 2,500,000 IDR per transaction
  • Foreign card fee: Minimal or none from the ATM itself
  • Exchange rate: Competitive, slightly behind BCA
  • ATM locations: Good coverage in main towns and the airport

### Mandiri (Bank Mandiri)

Reliable fallback. Mandiri is Indonesia's largest bank with ATMs everywhere.

  • Max withdrawal: 2,500,000 IDR per transaction
  • Foreign card fee: Minimal
  • Exchange rate: Competitive
  • ATM locations: Extensive coverage

### BRI (Bank Rakyat Indonesia)

BRI has the most ATMs in rural areas, which is useful if other banks are not available. However, exchange rates for foreign cards can be slightly less favorable.

ATM Locations by Area {#locations}

### Lombok Airport (LOP)

Multiple ATMs in the arrivals hall: BCA, BNI, Mandiri, BRI. These are the most convenient for withdrawing cash immediately upon arrival. Being airport ATMs, they are well-maintained and regularly stocked.

### Kuta Lombok

  • BCA: On Jalan Pariwisata (main tourist strip)
  • BNI: Near the main intersection
  • Mandiri: Along the main road
  • Minimarket ATMs: Indomaret and Alfamart stores have ATMs (usually BCA or BNI)

Total: 5-8 ATMs in the Kuta Lombok area. Sufficient for the town's needs, but they can run low on cash during busy periods.

### Senggigi

  • BCA: Along Jalan Raya Senggigi
  • BNI: Near the Art Market area
  • Mandiri: In the main commercial strip
  • BRI: Near the market

Good ATM coverage for the town's size. Senggigi's ATMs are generally reliable.

### Mataram

As the provincial capital, Mataram has the most ATMs on the island. Every major bank has multiple branches with ATMs. You will never struggle to find an ATM in Mataram.

Best spots: the main commercial streets (Jalan Pejanggik, Jalan Sriwijaya), shopping centers (Lombok Epicentrum Mall, Mataram Mall), and bank branches throughout the city.

### Praya

Several ATMs in the town center, useful if you are passing through on the way to or from the airport. BRI, BNI, and Mandiri are represented.

### Gili Islands

Gili Trawangan: 2-3 ATMs (BNI, BRI). Frequently out of cash on weekends and holidays. Do not rely on them.

Gili Air: 1 ATM (BNI). Unreliable.

Gili Meno: No ATMs.

Critical: Withdraw enough cash on the mainland to cover your entire Gili stay before crossing. Include a buffer of 500,000-1,000,000 IDR for unexpected expenses.

### Rural Areas

Outside the above towns, ATMs are scarce. The east coast, mountain areas, and interior villages may have a BRI ATM in the main village, but availability is unpredictable. Always carry sufficient cash when heading to rural areas.

Fees and How to Minimize Them {#fees}

### What You Pay

ATM withdrawal fees come from two sources:

1. Indonesian bank fee: Many Indonesian ATMs charge 0 fees to foreign cardholders. Some charge a small fee of 25,000-50,000 IDR per transaction, but this is uncommon at major banks.

2. Your home bank fee: This is usually the bigger cost. Most international banks charge $3-5 per overseas ATM withdrawal plus a 1-3% currency conversion markup.

### Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)

This is the single most important ATM tip: always decline the ATM's offer to convert to your home currency.

When you withdraw, some ATMs will show a screen offering to charge your card in your home currency (USD, GBP, EUR, etc.) instead of IDR. This is called Dynamic Currency Conversion, and it adds a 3-5% markup on the exchange rate. The conversion rate offered by the ATM is always worse than what your home bank provides.

The screen may be worded confusingly ("Proceed with conversion?" or "Would you like to be charged in [your currency]?"). Always select "Without Conversion" or "Continue in IDR" or "Decline Conversion."

### Minimizing Total Fees

1. Withdraw the maximum amount per transaction — if BNI allows 2,500,000 IDR per pull, take it all rather than making two smaller withdrawals

2. Use a travel-friendly bank card — cards like Charles Schwab (US), Revolut (EU/UK), or Wise reimburse ATM fees and charge zero currency conversion

3. Decline DCC every time — this saves 3-5% on every withdrawal

4. Make fewer, larger withdrawals — if your home bank charges per transaction, minimize the number of transactions

5. Try BCA first — best exchange rate consistently

ATM Safety and Practical Tips {#tips}

### Card Safety

  • Use indoor ATMs (bank lobbies, minimarkets) rather than standalone street machines. Indoor ATMs are less likely to have skimming devices.
  • Check the card slot before inserting — wiggle it to ensure nothing is attached over the real slot
  • Shield your PIN entry with your hand
  • Enable transaction alerts on your bank's app to monitor for unauthorized charges

### Practical Tips

  • Notify your bank of your Indonesia travel dates before departure. Otherwise, your bank may flag overseas withdrawals as fraud and block your card.
  • Carry two cards from different banks. If one card is blocked, lost, or swallowed by a machine, the backup keeps you solvent.
  • ATM swallows your card? It happens occasionally (usually due to too many wrong PIN attempts or a machine malfunction). Contact the bank branch during business hours. Having a backup card is essential for this scenario.
  • Run out of cash on a weekend? Minimarket ATMs (Indomaret, Alfamart) are restocked more frequently than bank ATMs and are open 24/7.
  • Large purchases: For significant expenses (dive courses, multi-day treks, resort stays), many businesses accept card payment. Ask before assuming you need to withdraw a large sum in cash.

Alternatives to ATMs {#alternatives}

### Money Exchange

Dedicated money changers in Mataram, Senggigi, and Kuta Lombok exchange USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, and SGD for IDR. Rates are generally worse than ATM rates but useful if you have foreign cash on hand. See our money exchange guide for detailed information.

### QRIS Digital Payment

Indonesia's universal QR payment system is increasingly available at restaurants, shops, and even some market stalls. If you have an Indonesian bank account or certain e-wallets (OVO, GoPay, DANA), QRIS eliminates the need for cash entirely in participating businesses. Tourists can access QRIS through some international fintech apps. See our QRIS guide for details.

### Card Payment

Visa and Mastercard are accepted at hotels, mid-range restaurants, dive centers, and tour operators in tourist areas. Expect a 2-3% surcharge at some businesses. Cash-only establishments are still the majority, especially for food and transport.

### Wise (TransferWise) Card

A popular choice among long-term travelers. The Wise multi-currency card offers near-interbank exchange rates and low fees for ATM withdrawals (free up to a limit, then small percentage). Load your Wise account with your home currency and spend or withdraw in IDR at excellent rates.
