September at Tiu Teja is genuinely excellent — quiet trails, returning flow, great weather. Among the year's best months.
September at Tiu Teja Waterfall is one of the best months to visit. Flow is returning as early-season showers begin, weather remains warm and largely dry, and crowds drop sharply once Australian and European school holidays end. The pool stays clear, trails stay firm, and you'll often have far more space than July or August. A connoisseur's month for waterfall visits in Lombok's north.
# Tiu Teja Waterfall in September: The Quiet Sweet Spot
September at Tiu Teja Waterfall is the month many returning visitors prefer over July and August. The peak-season crowds collapse as overseas school holidays end and Indonesian children return to school. Weather stays warm and largely dry. Water flow begins returning as the first early-season showers arrive. The pool stays clear from August's dry conditions but starts feeling more alive again. It's a connoisseur's month for north Lombok waterfalls.
September daytime highs are around 24°C in the hills, lows around 17°C — virtually unchanged from August. Rainfall begins to climb modestly, around 35mm spread over 4 days. Most of these are short late-afternoon showers, often dramatic but brief. Humidity edges back up to the low 70s.
At the waterfall, the visible change is subtle but real. The flow that bottomed out in August is starting to recover. Late September especially shows a noticeably stronger curtain than mid-August. The pool retains most of August's clarity — visibility typically 2-3 metres — but starts to take on a slightly more textured appearance as runoff returns minute particles to the water.
The trail from the parking warung is still firm and dry through most of September. Late in the month, after the first significant showers, expect patches of mud along the jungle stretch. Trail shoes are still the right choice. Walking time stays at 10-15 minutes from parking to the falls.
The viewing area is one of the most pleasant places to be in Lombok in September. Light through the canopy softens compared to peak summer harshness, making it a stronger photography month than August. The pool is genuinely lovely for swimming — clear enough to see depth, cool enough to refresh, and quiet enough that you can swim without constantly navigating other people.
September is when Tiu Teja returns to its naturally quiet character. Overseas school holidays end in the first week. European visitor numbers drop sharply. Australian travellers thin out. Indonesian schools are back in session, removing the domestic family weekend traffic.
By mid-September (around the 12th onwards), Tiu Teja often feels almost private. Even at midday — typically the busiest hour — you might share the pool with 5-10 other people rather than 25-50 in peak August. Independent travellers and small groups dominate; the tour-bus volume is much lower.
This is especially noticeable when you compare with Sendang Gile next door. Sendang Gile stays busy because of its roadside accessibility and inclusion in every basic itinerary. Tiu Teja's slightly remote feel keeps the crowd shift dramatic.
September is excellent for the full north Lombok waterfall day. With reduced crowds, you can do Sendang Gile, Tiu Kelep, and Tiu Teja in any order without timing pressure. The river crossings to Tiu Kelep are at near-minimum levels (lowest in August, returning slightly in September) — easiest of the year.
A relaxed September itinerary: leave Senggigi at 8am, reach Sendang Gile by 9:30am for a quick visit, hike to Tiu Kelep by 11am, swim and lunch nearby, drive to Tiu Teja by 2pm for an afternoon swim and photography, return to Senggigi by 5pm. The afternoon timing at Tiu Teja that's impossible in August works fine in September.
September accommodation prices in Senaru and Senggigi drop noticeably from peak — typically 20-30% off August rates. Room availability opens up, with same-week bookings usually possible. Restaurant queues shrink. Tour operators shift back to negotiable pricing.
Parking and guide tips at the falls remain unchanged at 10,000-20,000 IDR and 30,000-50,000 IDR respectively. Scooter rental drops slightly to 90,000-130,000 IDR; car with driver to 550,000-800,000 IDR for a north Lombok waterfall day.
The main September safety shift is the return of brief afternoon showers. These can make the trail slippery within 15 minutes of starting and can make the pool's edge rocks more hazardous. Plan for late-afternoon showers if you're staying past 3pm. Mosquito activity also returns as humidity rises — bring repellent.
The pool itself has the same year-round risks: don't jump from rocks (variable depth and submerged obstacles), don't swim directly under the falls (debris risk), and watch your footing on the perimeter stones.
September at Tiu Teja is among the best months of the year. You get most of August's water clarity and weather reliability with a fraction of the crowds. Returning flow makes the falls feel more alive. The light is better for photography. Mid-September especially is the sweet spot — visit then if you can. If you're choosing between June, July, August and September, September narrowly edges out the others for a balance of conditions and quiet.
Mid-September (12th-22nd) is the sweet spot — peak-season weather and water clarity, but post-holiday crowds. You'll often have the pool to yourself even at 11am, which is unimaginable in August. Bring insect repellent: as humidity creeps back up, mosquito activity returns, especially at the shaded viewing area in late afternoon.
