June at Tiu Teja is genuinely excellent — strong flow, quiet trails, swimmable pool. Among the best months to visit.
June is one of the best months for Tiu Teja Waterfall. Flow is strong from late rainy season runoff, the pool is swimmable and reasonably clear, and crowds are minimal because peak Australian and European holidays haven't started. The short hike from parking is straightforward in dry conditions, and it's an excellent quieter alternative to the famous Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep nearby.
# Tiu Teja Waterfall in June: Strong Flow Without the Crowds
June at Tiu Teja Waterfall is one of those rare windows when the conditions and the calendar align. The waterfall is fed by the same north Lombok catchment as the famous Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep, but it sits far enough off the main tour route that you can often have it almost to yourself. June catches the very start of dry season, so flow is still strong from the tail of rainy-season runoff, while the trails have firmed up enough to walk without slipping.
Expect daytime highs around 24°C and overnight lows near 17°C in the surrounding hills. June rainfall averages around 40mm across roughly 4 rainy days — most of those falling as short afternoon showers rather than full-day washouts. Humidity is mid-70s, noticeably more comfortable than the 90%-plus levels of January and February.
The waterfall itself is benefiting from the previous month's rain. Flow is strong but not muddy. The plunge pool is swimmable, with visibility usually 1-2 metres — clear enough to see the bottom in shallow areas. By August this same pool will be lower and clearer, but the dramatic flow you see in June is the trade-off.
Tiu Teja is a short hike from the parking warung — usually 10-15 minutes through farmland and a brief jungle section. The path is informal, not paved, and in June it's firm underfoot most days. After heavy rain it can be muddy in patches, so wear trail shoes with grip rather than flip-flops.
The viewing area sits at the base of the falls, with a natural plunge pool you can swim in. The drop isn't enormous — Tiu Teja is smaller than its famous neighbours — but the setting is genuinely peaceful. The cliff walls, ferns, and consistent water sound make it feel like a hidden corner.
Bring a dry bag for your phone. Spray reaches the rocks where most people leave their things.
This is where June shines. Australian school holidays don't start until the very end of the month, European summer travel hasn't picked up, and Indonesian school break is still ahead. Most days in early-to-mid June you'll share the waterfall with a handful of independent travellers and maybe one small Indonesian family group.
For the quietest visit, arrive between 8 and 10am. The light through the canopy is best at this hour, and the few tour groups that include Tiu Teja typically arrive after 11am as an add-on to their Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep itinerary. By 1pm the pool may have a few groups; by 3pm it's quiet again as people head back for sunset.
The classic north Lombok waterfall day combines Sendang Gile, Tiu Kelep, and Tiu Teja. Sendang Gile is roadside-accessible and crowded; Tiu Kelep requires a longer hike and river crossings; Tiu Teja is the quieter third stop. June water levels make all three viable.
If you only have time for one, Tiu Kelep is the most dramatic. If you want quiet, Tiu Teja is the answer. If you have a full day, do all three — start with Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep early (they get crowded fastest), then end at Tiu Teja in the quieter afternoon.
Entry to Tiu Teja is informal — usually a small parking fee (10,000-20,000 IDR) and an optional tip for whoever points you to the trail. There's no formal ticket office. A local guide isn't strictly necessary in June (the trail is short and clear), but tipping a young villager 30,000-50,000 IDR to walk you in is appreciated and supports the community.
The drive from Senggigi takes about 1.5 hours; from Mataram about 2 hours. Most visitors come as part of a north Lombok day trip rather than as a standalone destination. A scooter is fine if you're confident on rural roads — the final stretch is unsealed but rideable.
The main risks are slippery rocks at the pool edge and the path itself if it's rained recently. Don't jump from rocks into the pool — depth varies and there are submerged rocks. Don't swim directly under the waterfall — falling debris is a real risk after rain.
Phone signal is patchy near the waterfall. Tell someone your plan if you're going alone.
June is among the best months to visit Tiu Teja. You get the strong flow of late rainy season, the firm trails of dry season, and the quiet of pre-peak tourism. If you're choosing between June, July, August and September for a north Lombok waterfall trip, June and September are the connoisseur's choices — strong flow without the school-holiday crowds. July and August are also excellent but busier.
Arrive between 8 and 10am for the best light through the canopy and the pool to yourself. Most tour groups skip Tiu Teja entirely or arrive after 11am as a Sendang Gile add-on. Pay the small parking fee at the local warung and ask for the path — it's not signed at the road.
