June at Tiu Pupus is multi-tier flow at its best with quiet trails — among the year's strongest months.
June is one of the best months for Tiu Pupus Waterfall. The multi-tier falls are at their most impressive — strong flow from late rainy season, large plunge pool ready for swimming, and the 30-minute farmland hike is firm underfoot. Crowds are minimal because peak holidays haven't started, and most tour itineraries skip Tiu Pupus in favour of the famous Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep nearby.
# Tiu Pupus Waterfall in June: Multi-Tier Magic, Empty Trails
Tiu Pupus Waterfall is one of north Lombok's underrated highlights — a multi-tier waterfall reached by a 30-minute hike through farmland, with a large plunge pool that's perfect for swimming. June catches the falls at the very start of dry season, with strong flow inherited from rainy-season runoff and trails that have firmed up enough to walk comfortably. Combined with minimal crowds, June delivers the year's best balance of conditions.
June daytime highs in this part of north Lombok run around 24°C, with overnight lows near 17°C. Rainfall is around 40mm across roughly 4 days, usually arriving as brief afternoon showers rather than full-day rain. Humidity sits in the mid-70s — much more comfortable than the steamy 90%-plus levels of January and February.
Tiu Pupus's multi-tier structure shows off best when there's enough water to feed all the cascades. June water levels do exactly that. The upper tier sends a strong curtain over the lip; the middle cascade is full-volume; the lower drop into the plunge pool is at its most dramatic. By August the upper sections will be reduced. June is when you see Tiu Pupus closest to its full character.
The plunge pool itself is large and deep enough for proper swimming. Visibility in June is moderate — usually 1-2 metres — slightly clouded by suspended particles from upstream runoff but plenty clear enough for an enjoyable swim.
The trail starts at a parking warung near the village. The path winds for about 30 minutes through working farmland — rice paddies, corn fields, and small jungle stretches. It's not steep, but it's also not paved or signed. Several side trails branch off into private farmland.
This is why a local guide matters at Tiu Pupus more than at most Lombok waterfalls. A guide costs 50,000-100,000 IDR per group, ensures you reach the main multi-tier viewing area rather than the lower pool only, and supports the village whose land you're crossing. Without a guide, many visitors find the lower pool, swim, and leave without realising the better viewing spots are 5-10 minutes further upstream.
The viewing platform at the multi-tier falls is dramatic. You stand at the base of the lower drop, looking up at the cascading tiers with the plunge pool at your feet. June flow makes the whole structure feel alive.
June at Tiu Pupus is genuinely quiet. The location is off the standard tour route, and most operators stick to the easier Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep combination. On a typical June day, you might see 10-20 visitors total at the falls through the day, often clustered around midday.
For solitude, plan to be at the parking warung by 8am. The hike takes 30 minutes, putting you at the falls around 8:30-9am with virtually nobody else there. By 11am the first independent travellers usually arrive; by 1pm there might be 10-15 people total. After 3pm it's quiet again.
The light at the falls is best between 10am and noon when the sun reaches into the gorge. Earlier the upper tiers are in shade; later the lower pool loses its illumination.
Tiu Pupus sits well as either a standalone half-day or as part of a full north Lombok waterfall day with Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep. The standalone option works if you want a slower-paced visit with time to swim, photograph multiple tiers, and chat with the local guide. The combined day is faster-paced but lets you compare three very different waterfalls.
If combining, do Tiu Pupus first thing in the morning when it's quietest, then Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep after noon when their crowds have peaked. The reverse routing puts you at Tiu Pupus in mid-afternoon when the light is fading.
Parking is informal — usually 10,000-20,000 IDR. Guide fee is 50,000-100,000 IDR per group (worth it). There's no formal entry ticket. Warungs at the parking area sell water, snacks, and basic meals. Bring cash; no card payments.
The drive from Senggigi takes about 1.5 hours; from Mataram about 2 hours; from Senaru village about 30-45 minutes. Most visitors come as part of a north Lombok trip rather than as a standalone destination from south Lombok. A scooter is fine for confident riders; the final road to the parking warung is unsealed but rideable in dry conditions.
The 30-minute trail crosses uneven ground with multiple stream crossings. In June after a recent shower, expect mud patches. Trail shoes with grip are the right choice — flip-flops are not.
At the falls themselves, don't climb on the upper tiers. The rocks look climbable but are slippery and the drops are real. Stay at the viewing area. Don't swim under the lower drop — debris from upstream is a real risk. Watch your footing on the rocks around the pool edge.
Phone signal is unreliable through most of the hike. Tell someone your plan if you're going alone.
June at Tiu Pupus is excellent. You get the strongest multi-tier flow of the dry season, firm trails, peaceful crowds, and great light. If you're choosing between June, July, August, and September for a Tiu Pupus visit, June and September are the picks — strong flow with minimal crowds. July and August are also good but busier and with reduced upper-tier flow.
Hire a local guide at the parking warung — Tiu Pupus has multiple side trails and the path through farmland isn't obvious. A guide ensures you reach the main multi-tier viewing area instead of stopping at the lower pool only. Standard fee is 50,000-100,000 IDR per group, which directly supports the local community.
