July at Tiu Pupus is excellent water, easy trails, and surprising quiet despite being peak season. A strong choice.
July at Tiu Pupus Waterfall delivers peak dry-season conditions: clear water, firm trails, and reliably good weather. Multi-tier flow is reduced from June but still strong enough to be impressive. Crucially, Tiu Pupus stays much quieter than the famous Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep nearby because it's off most tour routes. The 30-minute farmland hike is at its easiest in July's dry conditions.
# Tiu Pupus Waterfall in July: Peak Season Without the Crush
July is peak season across Lombok, but Tiu Pupus Waterfall is one of the few major attractions where the crowds barely register. Most tour operators stick to the easier, road-accessible Sendang Gile and add Tiu Kelep with its longer hike — Tiu Pupus's 30-minute farmland trail and need for a local guide keeps casual visitors away. For independent travellers, July at Tiu Pupus is excellent: peak dry-season conditions, easy trails, and surprisingly empty viewing platforms.
July daytime highs hold around 24°C in the hills, lows near 17°C. Rainfall drops to about 25mm across 3 days — usually short evening showers rather than disruptive daytime rain. Humidity is around 72%, the most comfortable level of the year for hiking.
Tiu Pupus's multi-tier flow is reduced from June but still impressive. The upper tier curtain narrows slightly; the middle cascade looks similar; the lower drop into the plunge pool stays strong because it gathers water from all the upstream tiers. Compared to August, July still has a noticeable strength to the upper sections.
The plunge pool clarity improves significantly compared to June. Visibility in July is typically 2-3 metres — clear enough to see the bottom in shallow areas and to spot the geometry of submerged rocks. This is the start of the photographer-friendly months for Tiu Pupus.
The 30-minute hike from the parking warung crosses farmland and short jungle stretches. In July's dry conditions, the trail is firm — no mud, very few wet patches. The stream crossings are at low water and easy to navigate. This is by far the easiest month to make the hike, especially for visitors not accustomed to tropical walking.
A local guide is still strongly recommended. The trail's unmarked branches don't go away just because conditions are dry, and many visitors still miss the main multi-tier viewing area without a guide. Standard fee is 50,000-100,000 IDR per group, paid at the parking warung.
The viewing area at the multi-tier falls is dramatic in July. Sun reaches into the gorge from late morning through early afternoon, lighting up the cascades and the pool. Photography is at its strongest in this window.
Despite peak season, Tiu Pupus stays genuinely quiet. The combination of off-route location, required hike, and need for a local guide filters out most casual tour groups. On a typical July day you might see 15-30 people at the falls through the entire day — far fewer than the 200+ at Sendang Gile.
For solitude, plan to arrive at the parking warung by 7:30am. The hike takes 30 minutes in cool temperatures, putting you at the falls by 8am with virtually nobody else there. The first independent travellers usually arrive 10-11am; by 1pm the falls reach their July peak of maybe 15 people. After 3pm it's quiet again as people head back for sunset elsewhere.
The contrast with Sendang Gile next door is dramatic. Sendang Gile in July sees lines for the viewing platform and packed lower paths. Tiu Pupus feels like a different country.
The full north Lombok waterfall day is excellent in July: Tiu Pupus first thing in the morning while it's empty, then Sendang Gile mid-morning when its crowd is just building, then Tiu Kelep around midday after the hike, and a swim and lunch nearby. This sequencing maximises quiet time at Tiu Pupus and accepts the unavoidable crowds at Sendang Gile.
A standalone Tiu Pupus half-day works well too. Drive up from Senggigi early, hike, swim and photograph until midday, then drive to Bangsal for an afternoon Gili day trip. The Gili crossing and a few hours on Gili Air or Gili Meno add a contrasting coastal element to the day.
Parking remains 10,000-20,000 IDR. Guide fee stays 50,000-100,000 IDR per group — these aren't seasonally inflated. The biggest July cost shift is accommodation in nearby Senaru and Senggigi, which can be 30-50% more expensive than May or October. Book ahead for July stays.
A scooter rental runs 100,000-150,000 IDR per day in July; a car with driver 600,000-900,000 IDR for a north Lombok waterfall day. Fuel costs are unchanged.
July's main safety risks are sun exposure on the open farmland sections of the trail and the always-slippery rocks at the pool edge from spray. Bring a sun hat and water — the trail is uneven enough that you'll want both hands free for balance, so pack water in a small backpack rather than carrying a bottle.
At the falls, don't climb the upper tiers. The rocks look climbable but the drops are real and rescue is far away. Don't swim under the lower drop — even in dry season, debris can fall. Watch the footing on the perimeter stones.
Phone signal at the falls is patchy. Save offline directions before leaving the main road.
July at Tiu Pupus is one of peak season's quieter highlights. You get the polished dry-season conditions — firm trails, clear pool, reliable weather — without the crush that turns Sendang Gile into a queue. Multi-tier flow is reduced from June but still photogenic. If you're already in north Lombok in July and want a quieter waterfall option than Sendang Gile, Tiu Pupus is the answer.
July is the only peak-season month where Tiu Pupus often still feels solitary. Aim to arrive at the parking warung by 7:30am — by 8am you'll be hiking with cool temperatures and have the falls essentially private until at least 10am. Almost no tour vans visit Tiu Pupus, so even at 11am you'll typically share the pool with under 15 people.
