April is Sembalun's reopening month — treks back, weather improving fast, low crowds. Mid-April onwards is genuinely excellent.
Sembalun Valley in April reopens after the closure period — Mount Rinjani and Pergasingan Hill are accessible again. Rainfall drops to 150mm across 12 rainy days. Cool comfortable temperatures (24°C high, 15°C low). Crowds remain low and pricing is shoulder. Excellent month for trekking-focused trips after a few days of mid-month weather settling.
# Sembalun Valley in April: Reopening Month
April marks Sembalun's reopening. After three months of closure, Mount Rinjani and Pergasingan Hill come back online. Weather improves dramatically — rainfall drops to 150mm across 12 rainy days from March's 250mm. Temperatures become comfortable. The valley returns to itself.
The transition isn't instant on April 1. The first week or two has some reopening friction. By mid-April, Sembalun delivers fully.
Highs of 24°C and lows of 15°C — pleasantly cool by Indonesian standards. Humidity drops to 84%, more comfortable than the wet-season months. Daytime is comfortable for active pursuits, evenings are cool enough to want a fleece.
Rainfall pattern shifts decisively. The 12 rainy days are mostly brief afternoon showers rather than the day-long rain of January-February. Mornings and late afternoons are increasingly clear. Most days are entirely dry.
Cloud cover lifts substantially. Views back to Mount Rinjani's east face become reliable on most days. The mountain's presence — which defines the valley's character — is visually accessible again.
Mount Rinjani officially reopens April 1, but the practical reality varies:
Week 1 of April: Trail conditions still settling. Operators ramping up. Trek logistics may be flexible. Some treks delayed or modified based on real-time conditions.
Week 2 of April: Most operators fully operational. Trail conditions improving. Reliable bookings.
Mid-to-late April: Full operation. Standard itineraries running smoothly. Reliable summit attempts and crater rim camping.
If you're booking the multi-day Mount Rinjani trek for early April, choose an established operator with multi-year track record (not the cheapest option) and accept some itinerary flexibility. By April 15, everything is reliable.
Pergasingan Hill (the popular day trek alternative) follows similar dynamics but recovers slightly faster — by April 7-10, day treks are reliable.
Eid al-Fitr fell on March 19, 2026 with the holiday week extending into early April. Indonesian domestic tourism continues at elevated levels through about April 7. Sembalun sees a small bump in homestay occupancy, especially over the Eid weekend.
After April 7, the Eid wave subsides and the valley returns to quiet.
Pergasingan Hill day trek is the headline restoration. The 1,854m hill offers a steep but rewarding day trek with summit views back to Mount Rinjani's east face. By mid-April, the trail is in good condition. Budget 6-8 hours round-trip including a 1-hour summit time. Most treks start 4-5am for sunrise summit.
Mount Rinjani multi-day treks restart. The standard 3-day Sembalun-route trek (up Sembalun, summit, crater lake, down Senaru) becomes available. April pricing is at shoulder levels — typically 15-20% off July-August peak. Cost runs 2-3 million IDR per person for proper organised treks.
Coffee plantation tours continue. April is between coffee growth phases, with maintenance work happening in plantations. Tours remain interesting and tastings are at full quality.
Strawberry farm walks see early growth before the July harvest. Greenhouses are active. Tasting limited to preserved products.
Traditional village visits are excellent. Sembalun Bumbung and Sembalun Lawang reward exploration in good weather. Photography is great with crisp post-monsoon light.
Cycling through the valley becomes pleasant on dry days. The flat valley floor is gentle riding; the surrounding hills offer harder climbs for fit cyclists.
April pricing returns to shoulder levels — typically 15-20% off July-August peak. Homestays charge 200,000-400,000 IDR per night for proper rooms. Trek operators offer 15-20% discounts versus peak.
This combined with low crowds makes April excellent value for trekking trips.
April sees the first wave of return visitors but remains far quieter than peak July-August. Trekking infrastructure ramping up means some operators are at lower capacity. Homestays have ample availability.
Pergasingan summit might see 10-15 people at sunrise on busy days — far less than peak season's 30-50. Mount Rinjani trek groups are smaller and have more flexibility.
A solid April Sembalun visit:
Day 1: Arrive afternoon, check into homestay, valley walk, dinner with family
Day 2: Pergasingan day trek (4am start, summit by 6am, descend by noon, recovery afternoon)
Day 3: Coffee plantation tour, village visits, depart afternoon
For multi-day Rinjani:
Day 1: Arrive Sembalun, gear check, briefing
Day 2-4: Trek (Sembalun-summit-crater lake-Senaru standard route)
Day 5: Recover and depart
Plan your overall Lombok trip with 4-6 days at Sembalun if Mount Rinjani is the goal, 2-3 days if just Pergasingan.
Mount Rinjani trek operators — book 4-6 weeks ahead for early-to-mid April to lock in established operators at shoulder rates. Last-minute bookings work but quality varies.
Pergasingan day trek — book 2-3 days ahead through your homestay for guide arrangement.
Homestays — book 1-2 weeks ahead for major destinations (Sembalun Bumbung). Last-minute often works.
April is Sembalun's reopening month and one of the year's strongest values. After two weeks of operator ramp-up, the destination delivers full quality at shoulder pricing with low crowds. Treks are accessible, weather is comfortable, and the valley returns to its agricultural-mountain character.
Choose April if you can. The same Mount Rinjani trek runs cheaper and quieter in April than in July-August, with comparable weather quality. Strawberry harvest is later (July) and coffee harvest later still (September), so April misses those specific cultural draws.
For trekking-focused trips, April is excellent. For agricultural-tourism focus, push to July or September. For overall value with reliable conditions, mid-April through mid-October is the broad strong window.
Early April has reopening confusion. Mount Rinjani officially opens April 1 but trail conditions and operator readiness vary. The most reliable trek bookings are mid-April onwards. If you're booking a 3-day Rinjani trek for early April, choose an established operator (with multi-year track record) and be prepared for itinerary flexibility based on conditions. By April 15, everything is fully operational.
