February is still wrong for Pergasingan — wet, foggy, and Ramadan begins mid-month. Reschedule to May-September.
Pergasingan Hill remains effectively closed in February. Trails are still saturated, summit fog is constant, and Ramadan begins on February 18 in 2026 — Sembalun guides observe the fast and reduce activity. Don't plan a February climb. May through September is the right window.
# Pergasingan Hill in February: Wet Season Continues, Ramadan Begins
February is the second month in Pergasingan Hill's effective closure window. The weather hasn't improved meaningfully from January — 320mm of rain across 22 days, summit fog that lifts only briefly, and trails that haven't had time to dry out. On top of the natural conditions, Ramadan begins on February 18 in 2026, which changes how Sembalun village operates for the back half of the month.
If you're researching Pergasingan for a February trip, this page is here to redirect you. There is a good time to climb this hill. February is not it.
The Sembalun valley sits at 1,150m and Pergasingan's summit is at 1,854m. Weather at altitude is meaningfully worse than coastal Lombok forecasts suggest:
The sunrise window that defines a Pergasingan climb (4am to 6:30am at the summit) is the worst-visibility time of day in February. You climb in the dark, arrive in fog, and descend in cloud. The Rinjani view, the Sembalun valley panorama, the distant Sumbawa silhouette — none of it appears.
Pergasingan's path is volcanic clay and grass. After January's saturation continues into February, the trail is:
The local guide cooperative inspects the trail in late March before declaring an April reopening. February inspection visits typically confirm what they already expect — the trail isn't ready.
Ramadan begins on February 18 in 2026 and runs through March 19. Sembalun is one of the most religiously observant Sasak Muslim communities on Lombok — more than coastal areas like Senggigi or Kuta.
What this means practically:
Daytime fasting affects guides who would normally lead pre-dawn climbs. They're awake at 3am for sahur (pre-fast meal), fasting through sunrise to sunset, and physically conserving energy. Even guides willing to work during Ramadan don't take overnight summit camping bookings.
Reduced warung availability through the afternoon. Most food stalls close during fasting hours and open after maghrib (around 6pm).
Cultural sensitivity matters. Loud groups, daytime drinking, and immodest dress draw stronger negative reactions in Sembalun than in tourist coastal areas. Visitors are welcome but expected to be discreet.
If you're determined to be in Sembalun during Ramadan for cultural reasons, that's valid — just don't expect to climb Pergasingan, and plan to be respectful.
The Sembalun valley itself remains accessible:
For most travelers, this is enough to justify a quick stop on a longer Lombok itinerary, but not enough to plan a trip around.
If February is your only travel window:
Skip Pergasingan and Rinjani entirely. Both are out of bounds. Focus on:
Reschedule the climb to May-September. Pergasingan in June or July is one of the best single-day hikes on Lombok. It's worth waiting for the right window.
The reopening sequence after February is:
For travelers committed to Pergasingan as a Lombok highlight, plan for May, June, July, August, or September. Avoid October-November (closing window) and December-March (wet season).
There's no clever workaround for February. The hill is closed in practice, the guides aren't running climbs, and even if you did make the summit, you'd see fog. Save this hike for the right month and use February for things Lombok actually does well right now.
Ramadan starts on February 18 in 2026 and Sembalun is one of the most observant Muslim communities on Lombok. Even if Pergasingan were climbable, the local guides who would normally take you up are fasting from 4am to 6pm. Pre-dawn climbs become culturally awkward as well as logistically impossible. Wait till after Eid in late March if you want any Sembalun activity.
