The advanced reef-break season starts in June with manageable conditions and small crowds — but the wave demands respect from session one.
Outside Ekas in June is waking up. The bay-mouth reef break — heavy, fast, throwing big right and left walls over a shallow shelf — turns on with the first proper Southeast swells of dry season. June is the lightest month of the season at Outside, with chest-to-overhead conditions on the better swells, manageable crowds (only the committed paddle out here), and a chance to learn the wave's quirks before July-August's biggest events arrive. Advanced surfers only — this is not a wave to dabble with.
# Outside Ekas Surf in June: When the Heavy Reef Wakes Up
Outside Ekas is South Lombok's heavy-wave proving ground. Sitting at the open mouth of Ekas Bay, exposed to the full Indian Ocean Southeast swell with no protection from any headland, the wave breaks fast and powerful over a shallow coral shelf. It's a right and a left depending on the section, both throwing genuine barrels on the better days, and both punishing wipeouts on the worst. June is the wave's gentlest month of the dry season — which is to say, still serious but with manageable size and the smallest crowd of the year.
Ekas Bay is a deep inlet on Lombok's southeastern tip. Two surf breaks share the bay:
The two waves are 800 meters apart but operate as completely different waves. Inside is for learning. Outside is for surfers who already know what they're doing on heavy reef breaks. Do not paddle out at Outside if you've been thinking about Inside.
The contrast is also why Ekas works as a base for mixed-skill groups: advanced surfers can session Outside while intermediates session Inside, with everyone meeting up afterward at Heaven on the Planet.
June is the start of dry season swell. Specific to Outside:
For advanced surfers planning to surf Outside in peak season, June is the smart reconnaissance month.
Outside Ekas breaks both right and left:
Either way, the wave demands:
Unlike Inside Ekas, where walk-in access from Heaven on the Planet is possible, Outside Ekas effectively requires boat support. Reasons:
In June, plan to hire a boat for 800k-1.2M IDR for a half-day, with the boatman waiting in the channel during your session. This is not a wave to do without support.
The June crew at Outside is small and serious:
Total at dawn: 6-15 surfers most June days. That's the year's lowest crowd at Outside.
The vibe is different from any other South Lombok wave. There's no aggression because there's no need — only people at the level paddle out, and the wave doesn't tolerate poseurs. Senior surfers will quietly observe a newcomer for the first session, and if they're at the level, will be welcoming.
Boat charter dominates the cost structure at Outside:
Outside is not a budget wave. Plan for 1.5-2M IDR per session day all-in.
Recommended boards for Outside in June:
Don't try to surf Outside on a standard 6'0" shortboard. The wave demands a board with hold and paddle power.
Outside Ekas has injured surfers. Specifically:
Required safety practices:
Reconnaissance for the season: If you plan to surf Outside in July-August, June is the month to learn it.
Manageable size: Better days are overhead but not the genuinely massive August events.
Light crowds: 6-15 surfers means real wave count for those at the level.
Boat support availability: Operators have time and aren't running back-to-back peak charters.
Outside Ekas in June is for genuinely advanced surfers who want a serious reef break in manageable conditions before the July-August peak crowds and bigger swell. The wave is on, the boats are available, the crew is welcoming, and you can learn the wave's quirks before they really matter. Just remember: this is not a wave to dabble with at any level. If you're not certain you're advanced, do not paddle out. Surf Inside and watch Outside from the bluff instead.
The boat positioning at Outside Ekas is critical and underrated. The right boatmen know the channel, the rip, the impact zone, and the best safety drop-off points — the wrong boatmen will leave you in dangerous water. Pay the premium for an experienced operator (1-1.5M IDR for the morning is typical, not 600k). Ask at Heaven on the Planet for their boat recommendation, or contact Ekas Surf Lodge directly. Also: never paddle out at Outside Ekas without first watching at least one full set from the boat. The set spacing, the section behavior, and the rip current are not what they seem from the channel.
