September is the photographers' Merese — the best balance of golden grass, dramatic sunsets, calmer wind, and easing crowds.
Merese Hill in September is the photographers' favourite. Wind eases significantly from August's peak, returning humidity adds drama and colour to sunsets, the grass stays golden, and crowds drop noticeably as European summer ends and Australian school holidays gap. Excellent value for the iconic image with a calmer ridge experience.
# Merese Hill in September: The Photographers' Choice
September on Merese Hill is the month experienced photographers and repeat visitors target. The defining peak-season elements remain in place — golden grass, reliable sunsets, dry path, easy access — but August's intensity eases across nearly every dimension. Wind drops, sunset colour returns, crowds thin in the early month, and the whole hilltop experience becomes calmer and more pleasant.
September rainfall stays low at around 30mm across 3 days. Most of the month is dry, with occasional brief afternoon showers that pass quickly. Temperatures rise slightly from August (30°C high, 22°C low), and humidity climbs to 73% — a noticeable shift from August's 70%.
The humidity change matters for sunsets. The slight return of moisture to the air creates more atmospheric particles for sunlight to scatter through, producing richer colour saturation in the western sky. This is why September often delivers the most beautiful sunsets of the year despite August having the most reliable ones.
Wind drops sharply through September. Trade winds ease from August's 30-50 km/h afternoon peaks down to 15-25 km/h by late September. The hilltop becomes physically calmer, drone work becomes routine again, and photography stability improves significantly.
September sunsets are slightly less reliable than August (about 9 out of 10 evenings produce viewable sunsets versus August's near-100%) but significantly more dramatic when they happen. The returning humidity, occasional cloud, and lower wind combine to produce sunset frames with rich colour, layered cloud formations, and the kind of fanning-light moments that define magazine-cover photography.
The trade-off: you might get one or two evenings per month where late afternoon cloud build-up actually blocks the sunset (something that almost never happens in August). For travellers visiting for 5+ days, this is barely a factor; for single-evening visits, it's worth tracking the radar.
September 2026 sunset times sit around 5:45-5:50 PM throughout the month. Light starts working from 5:15 PM. Post-sunset glow extends until 6:20 PM with strong colour displays.
This is where September dramatically improves on July-August. The first two weeks of September see weekday evening counts of 80-150 at the main viewpoint and weekends 150-250. That's roughly half the density of July-August.
Australian school holidays begin in late September and continue through early October, creating a sharp uptick from about September 20. Late-month weekends see 250-400. Even at this level, the experience is noticeably calmer than mid-summer.
Wedding photography density drops to manageable levels — 3-6 active shoots on a typical afternoon rather than 8-15. The ridge feels shared rather than competitive.
September starts at peak pricing for the first two weeks, then begins easing. Hotel rates in Kuta hold near peak through mid-September before dropping 15-30% in the second half (excluding Australian school-holiday week). Scooter rentals and tour packages start showing flexibility.
This is the last full month of peak pricing. October sees significant easing despite some continuing crowds.
Roads remain perfect — fully dry, well-graded, easy for any vehicle. Dust on access roads is reducing as wind eases and occasional showers settle the surface. Parking at Merese is busy but functional, with attendants charging peak rates through mid-month and easing slightly later.
The walk up takes 15 minutes on dry packed path. Closed shoes recommended but flip-flops are fine for confident walkers. Buffalo are present and active across both ridges.
September is one of the best months for serious photography on Merese:
Plan to arrive 60-90 minutes before sunset for prime spots in the first two weeks; 75-90 minutes in the late month with school holidays. Wedding shoots claim spots earlier but density is workable.
For drone work: September is excellent. Wind drops to comfortable levels, light is dramatic, and the colour palette is at peak. Operate before 5 PM for cleanest blue-water turquoise in the bay below; after 5 PM for warm gold-green tones that complement the grass.
September is also the absolute peak month for snorkelling clarity at Pink Beach (Tangsi Beach), which is visible as a distant pink smudge on the southeastern coast from the right angle on Merese. If you're combining a south Lombok trip in September, the Merese-to-Pink-Beach itinerary is perfectly timed: best sunset photography on the ridge plus best snorkelling visibility on the beach.
The grass colour story in September is interesting. Early September shows fully golden grass at peak yellow. Late September shows the first hints of brown as continuing dryness pushes the grass past peak. Photographers who want the cleanest gold should target the first three weeks; those who want a slightly more textured gold-brown can shoot late month.
Buffalo behaviour shifts subtly. The cooler conditions and slightly returning humidity bring them out earlier in the afternoon than midsummer. You'll often see the herd grazing on the main viewpoint area from 4 PM rather than waiting until 5 PM as in July-August.
Possible: All photography styles (sunset, sunrise, drone, time-lapse, wedding), comfortable extended hilltop time, multiple-attempt photography sessions, picnic visits, calm-wind drone work.
Not really possible: Empty hilltop on Australian school-holiday weekends, completely dry conditions every single day (occasional showers returning).
September vs July: September has half the crowds, lower prices in the second half, calmer wind, more dramatic sunsets, slightly less reliability.
September vs August: September has calmer wind, more colourful sunsets, slightly less reliability, less crowd density.
September vs October: September is cleaner-feeling — pre-MotoGP weekend chaos, more reliable weather, peak grass colour. October has lower prices and the MotoGP atmosphere if motorsport interests you.
For most photographers and travellers prioritising experience quality over absolute reliability, September is the optimum month. The combination of golden grass, dramatic sunsets, calmer wind, manageable crowds, and easing prices is unique in the calendar.
September is the only month that combines fully golden grass, returning sunset colour, calmer wind, and dropping crowds. Photographers who shoot Merese repeatedly across years almost universally rank September as their favourite month — better than July or August despite the slight reliability dip. Aim for the second week of September: still pre-Australian-school-holiday, post-European-summer, and the weather pattern is most consistent. Bring a wider lens than you think you need; September skies often produce sky-filling colour displays.
