Mellow protected lefts perfect for improving surfers — June starts the season with manageable crowds and warm clean conditions.
Inside Ekas in June is the welcoming face of South Lombok surf. Tucked deep in Ekas Bay's sheltered northern corner, the wave breaks as a long mellow left over a forgiving reef shelf — perfect for improving beginners stepping up from beach breaks and intermediates working on their backhand. June brings the first reliable SE swell, light morning offshores, and a relaxed crew that contrasts sharply with the busy Selong Belanak/Don Don lineups to the west.
# Inside Ekas Surf in June: The Friendly Side of South Lombok
Inside Ekas is the wave you go to when you don't want what Don Don and Mawi serve up. Tucked deep in the protected northern corner of Ekas Bay, on the southeastern tip of Lombok, the wave breaks as a long, mellow left over a forgiving reef shelf. It's the surf school's favorite South Lombok reef, the destination of choice for confident beginners stepping up from beach breaks, and a comfortable proving ground for intermediates working on their backhand or first reef-break sessions. June kicks off the season with the first proper SE swells filling the bay.
Ekas Bay is a deep inlet on Lombok's southeastern tip. Two surf breaks share the bay:
Inside Ekas breaks where the SE swell wraps into the bay and meets a gently-sloping reef shelf. The wave loses much of its power on the wrap, producing a manageable left that walls up nicely without throwing the heavy lip you'd find at Outside or Don Don. On a clean June day with mid tide, the wave runs for 80-150 meters in good sections.
The setting is also part of the appeal: the bay is hemmed by limestone cliffs to the south and rolling savanna to the north, with Heaven on the Planet resort perched on the bluff overlooking the wave. It's visually stunning in a way that the Selong Belanak area, beautiful as it is, doesn't quite match.
June is the start of dry season swell. The benefits at Inside Ekas:
For improving beginners and intermediates, June is one of the best months to learn the wave.
Two access routes:
Boat from Awang harbor. Awang is the small fishing village on the western side of Ekas Bay's entrance, about 1-1.5 hours by car from Kuta Lombok. Local boatmen run dinghy transfers across the bay to Inside Ekas for 250-450k IDR one-way per group. The crossing takes 15-20 minutes through often glassy bay water. Most visitors take this route.
Walk-in from Heaven on the Planet. The resort sits on the bluff above the wave with a maintained path down to the beach. If you're staying at Heaven, you walk 5 minutes and paddle straight out. If you're not staying, you can sometimes negotiate access via stopping for a meal at their restaurant.
Drive to Ekas village then walk. A bumpy road reaches Ekas village proper. From there, a 20-minute walk on a marked trail leads to the wave. This is the budget option but adds significant time to your day.
Inside Ekas has a distinctly different energy from Don Don. The wave doesn't attract serious shortboard chargers (they're at Outside Ekas or Don Don), so the mix is:
The crowd is small (10-25 surfers most June dawns), polite, and generally happy to share. Local etiquette still applies — wait your turn, don't snake — but the pressure is far lower than at Don Don.
Shoulder-season pricing at Ekas:
If you're committed to Inside Ekas as the focus of your trip, staying at Heaven or in Ekas village makes more sense than commuting daily from Kuta.
Coaching sessions: The wave is forgiving enough for video-review coaching to be productive. Beginners stepping up from beach breaks get their first reef-wave success here.
Long sessions: Without the crowd pressure, you can stay out 2-3 hours comfortably without the territorial stress of Don Don.
Combining Inside and Outside: If you're traveling with mixed-skill friends, advanced surfers can paddle out at Outside Ekas while intermediates session Inside, then meet up afterward for lunch at Heaven.
Dawn patrol with breakfast at Heaven: Surf 6-8 AM, walk up the bluff, breakfast on the cliff overlooking the bay. One of Lombok's most underrated mornings.
Adrenaline shortboarders: The wave is too mellow for the high-performance shortboard crowd. They'll be bored after 30 minutes.
Complete beginners: Inside Ekas is not for true never-surfed-before beginners. A beach break (Selong Belanak, Tanjung Aan) is the better start.
Late afternoon glass: Wind comes onshore by mid-morning and rarely turns back glassy in the afternoon.
Inside Ekas in June is the right wave for confident beginners and intermediates who want a real reef-break experience without the size, intimidation, or crowd pressure of Don Don and Mawi. The setting is gorgeous, the wave forgiving, and June's conditions reliable without being peak-season expensive. Plan a 4-7 day base in Ekas, alternate between Inside sessions and exploration of the surrounding south-east Lombok area, and you'll have one of the best surf trips on the island.
The walk-in access from Heaven on the Planet's beach path is significantly underused by visitors who default to the Awang boat option. If you stay at Heaven (or even just stop for lunch with permission), you can walk five minutes down their path and paddle directly out — saving the 250-450k boat fee and gaining flexibility on session timing. The resort is reasonably welcoming to surfers who book a meal or coffee. The path is well-maintained. Most boat-arriving surfers don't realize this option exists. Quietly use it.
