October is the month divers and underwater photographers quietly prefer over July–August. The reason is simple: visibility. The dry season has been removing suspended sediment and plankton from the water for months, and by October the clarity reaches 30 meters+ on good days. Photographers who care about clean water shots arrive specifically in October.
Early October still feels like late September — dry, calm, warm. Mid-October starts showing occasional afternoon clouds. Late October sometimes brings the first rain of the approaching wet season, though "first rain" means 5–10 mm showers, not full storms. The transition is gradual rather than abrupt.
Rainfall jumps from September's 25mm to October's 60mm, most of that in the last 10 days of the month. If you arrive early October, you're essentially getting September weather. If you arrive late October, you may see the first few days of rainy-season behavior.
October diving conditions are arguably the best of the year for experienced divers. Visibility peaks, marine life is still active from dry season, and operators run at reduced capacity compared to July peak — smaller groups, more attention, better photography opportunities. Nitrogen-loading charts benefit from the consistently warm water.
October runs at shoulder-season levels: maybe 50–60% of July peak. European autumn-break travelers create a small mid-month bump (varies by country — German and UK half-term weeks), but overall the island feels manageable. Main street is active but not crowded. Dive boats have space.
Prices drop 20% below peak. Accommodation that was 1,100,000 IDR in August is 850,000 IDR in October. Fast boats drop to 400,000 IDR. Dive packages get 15% off to fill seats.
Almost identical to September but with slightly earlier sunsets (dusk comes 10 minutes earlier as the month progresses) and occasional short afternoon showers that clear within 30 minutes. Morning diving, midday beach or pool, sunset at Pearl Beach, dinner, bed. Quietly perfect.
October has the single best snorkel visibility of the year. If you have photography equipment, October is your month — plankton levels are at annual lows, water is crystal-clear, and the afternoon light angle is the most cinematic. Arrive early-to-mid October before the first serious rains arrive late in the month.
