May is the first full month of Lombok's peak dry season. Gili Trawangan sees consistent sunshine, warm water (27–28°C), excellent snorkeling visibility (25m), and the start of surge season for dive shops and boat tours. Prices rise 15–20% above April and crowds increase gradually toward the June–August peak.

May feels like the real beginning of Lombok's tourism year. Dry season is solidly established, the European winter break window has ended, and the long peak run from May through August starts in earnest. Gili T runs at maybe 70% of peak capacity by late May — busy enough to feel alive, not yet crowded enough to feel overrun.
April is the "smart" month for value. May is the "quality" month for experience. The difference is subtle but real: May brings warmer water (27–28°C vs April's 26–27°C), more reliable weather (rain drops from 110mm to 70mm), and more boat operators running full schedules. If your budget allows the 15–20% premium over April, May delivers a noticeably more polished experience.
May is reliably sunny. Expect 1–2 rain days in a full week-long visit, usually brief showers that don't disrupt plans. Temperatures hold at 27–32°C with humidity dropping to 72% (comfortable rather than sticky). The sea is calm most days and the crystalline water returns fully.
Gili T in May feels busy but not crowded. The main strip is active, dive boats leave on schedule, restaurants need reservations for prime sunset tables, but you're not queuing for everything. By mid-late May, European school-holiday seekers and early-bird Australian families start arriving — by the end of the month, the island feels fuller than the beginning.
Book 6 weeks ahead for May travel. Popular dive shops (Blue Marlin, Trawangan Dive) and sunset-view accommodations fill up faster than the rest of the island. Basic hostels and mid-range hotels can still be had 2 weeks out, but with reduced choice.
May is when south Lombok surf day trips from Gili T become genuinely worthwhile. Fast boat to Bangsal, private driver to Kuta Lombok, surf lesson at Selong Belanak or Gerupuk, return the same day. May is early enough that surf breaks aren't crowded and skilled enough that the conditions deliver.
