Transition month with rapidly improving conditions — late March is genuinely underrated value if you accept some lingering rain.
March is the start of seasonal transition at Gerupuk Bay. Rainfall drops to around 220mm with 16 rainy days, sea conditions calm noticeably, and Inside continues to fire daily. Outside starts producing occasional clean days as swell direction begins shifting. Crowds remain low through most of March, with surf camps starting to ramp up by month-end. Boat costs hold at 100-150k IDR.
# Gerupuk Bay in March: The Transition Begins
March at Gerupuk Bay marks the turn. Wet season is winding down, dry season is still weeks away, and the bay sits in a productive in-between. For surfers willing to read conditions day-by-day, March offers some of the year's best value.
The headline March story is improvement across nearly every metric:
Rainfall: Drops to around 220mm spread across 16 days (vs 280mm/20 days in February). Mornings are increasingly dry. Afternoon storms still occur but they're less frequent and less intense than January-February.
Sea state: Open ocean settles noticeably. The choppy, wind-driven surface chop of mid-wet-season eases as winds become lighter and more variable. The boat ride from launch beach to the reefs becomes consistently pleasant.
Swell: Begins to organize. The first south swells of the season start arriving — irregular at first, but unmistakable when they hit. Late March often produces the year's first proper Outside Gerupuk sessions.
Visibility: Air clarity improves dramatically. The hazy, humid sky of January-February gives way to cleaner views. Afternoon clouds still build but they're less oppressive.
Inside Gerupuk: Continues to be the reliable workhorse. 2-4 foot waves daily, occasionally pushing 5 feet on swell days. The same friendly intermediate-level wave that's worked all wet season, now with cleaner conditions.
Outside Gerupuk: Wakes up. Expect 2-5 quality days through the month when south swells arrive and conditions clean up. Wave faces 4-7 feet on the better days. Still inconsistent — don't plan a trip around Outside in March, but enjoy it when it comes.
Don Don: Increasingly viable. As afternoon storms become less frequent, the late-afternoon offshore sea breeze starts producing the glassy sessions Don Don is famous for. Late March can deliver textbook Don Don days.
Kids Point: Occasionally good. Better as you move toward April.
Pelawangan: Still inconsistent. Needs more developed west swell, which is more reliable from May onwards.
March is the last month of low-season pricing and low-season crowds at Gerupuk. The change is gradual:
Early March (1-15): Wet-season conditions in lineups. Empty boats, friendly atmosphere, full negotiating power on accommodation.
Mid-March (15-25): Surf camps starting to ramp up marketing for shoulder season. Some early-bird Australian and European surfers arriving. Lineups still light.
Late March (25-31): Transition visible. Boat traffic increasing. Prices starting to firm. Surf-school day groups returning to Inside.
If you can travel late March, you'll catch improving conditions at near-low-season prices. By April, both crowds and prices begin moving up.
Boat charters: 100,000-150,000 IDR per session, occasionally creeping toward 175,000 IDR by late month.
Parking: 10,000 IDR (unchanged year-round).
Accommodation in Kuta: 200,000-450,000 IDR for quality bungalows; premium villas 600,000-1,200,000 IDR. Late-March deals are exceptional value.
Surf lessons: 350,000-500,000 IDR (3 hours including board).
Rentals: Board rental availability improves as shops bring inventory back from off-season storage. Quality boards from 100,000-200,000 IDR per day.
March favors a 5-7 day trip that lets you ride the conditions:
Day 1-2: Arrive, settle in Kuta, mellow Inside sessions, scout the bay.
Day 3: Check forecast. If swell building, target Outside session for next morning. If not, repeat Inside.
Day 4-5: Outside sessions if conditions cooperate. Don Don evening session if afternoon clears.
Day 6: Rest day or explore (Tanjung Aan, Selong Belanak, Mawun).
Day 7: Final session. Inside is always there as backup.
Compared to January-February: Better conditions, slightly higher (still low) prices, same low crowds.
Compared to April-May: Wetter, cheaper, less consistent Outside, much less crowded.
Compared to June-September peak: Smaller waves, vastly cheaper, vastly less crowded.
For value-conscious intermediate surfers, March (especially late March) is among the best months of the year at Gerupuk. You trade some swell consistency for empty lineups and 50% lower costs than peak.
Late March is the sweet spot — rain eased, swell starting to build, prices still low, lineups still empty. Book the last week of March for the best value-to-conditions ratio of the year. Watch swell forecasts mid-month: the first proper Outside Gerupuk sessions of the year often arrive in the second half of March, and you can catch them with no crowd.
