Surprisingly viable for Inside Gerupuk surf despite the rain — the most reliable south-coast option in January if you accept the wet conditions.
Gerupuk Bay in January is wet but surfable. The Inside reef break works almost daily on smaller swells, making it one of the few reliable Lombok waves during monsoon. Outside, Don Don, and Kids Point are inconsistent due to dropping swell. Expect heavy afternoon rain, choppy sea outside the bay, and very light surf-school crowds. Boat charters still operate at 100-150k IDR.
# Gerupuk Bay in January: The Wet Season Surf Bay
Gerupuk Bay in January is wet, quiet, and — for the right surfer — quietly productive. While most of Lombok's surf scene shifts to mainland Indonesia or Australia for the southern hemisphere summer, Gerupuk's unique geography keeps Inside reef working through the monsoon.
January is genuinely wet on Lombok's south coast. Expect 320mm of rain across roughly 22 days. The pattern is predictable: mornings are usually clear or lightly overcast, building to heavy thunderstorms from early afternoon through evening. Air temperature stays warm (30°C high, 24°C low) and water temperature is comfortable enough for boardshorts.
Sea conditions outside Gerupuk Bay are choppy. Trade winds have reversed (now blowing onshore from the west and northwest), kicking up surface chop on the open ocean. Inside the bay itself, the geography provides shelter — Inside reef breaks in calmer water than you'd expect from the open-ocean conditions just a few hundred meters offshore.
Gerupuk has five named breaks across the bay. Their January reality:
Inside (Inside Gerupuk): This is the star in January. A sheltered, mellow right-hander on the inner reef that needs only modest swell to work. With consistent small wraparound swell entering the bay, Inside breaks on most days. Wave size typically 2-4 feet. Friendly for intermediates, suitable for advanced beginners with instructor.
Outside (Outside Gerupuk): Inconsistent in January. Needs 4ft+ open-ocean swell to wrap into the bay properly. You'll get a few days per month when Outside fires, but it's not the reliable winter wave it becomes from May onwards.
Don Don: The afternoon sea-breeze wave that shines from May to October. In January, the afternoon rain pattern usually kills the session. Some morning glass-offs work but it's not the destination break this month.
Kids Point: Inconsistent due to swell direction. Better off-season alternative is Inside.
Pelawangan: Needs proper west swell — rare in January.
January is the lowest-crowd month at Gerupuk. The surf-school clusters that pack the bay from June to September are running skeleton operations. You'll see:
For surfers who hate crowds, January Gerupuk is a quiet alternative to peak-season chaos. The trade-off is wave consistency and weather.
Boat charters from the launch beach run 100,000-150,000 IDR per session in January (down from 150,000-250,000 IDR in peak season). Negotiate at the beach — most boatmen are happy to work in low season and prices are softer.
Parking at the launch beach: 10,000 IDR.
Accommodation: Stay in Kuta Lombok (15-minute drive). Gerupuk village itself has very limited accommodation and most options are closed in January. Kuta has wet-season deals — quality bungalows for 200,000-400,000 IDR/night vs 600,000+ in peak.
Food: A few warungs in Gerupuk village stay open serving simple Indonesian food (nasi campur, mie goreng, fresh juice). Bring water; bottled supply is limited.

Surf early. Arrive at the launch beach by 7am to be on the water by 7:30. You'll get 2-3 hours of clean conditions before the wind shifts and afternoon clouds build.
Watch the sky from the boat. Tropical storms move fast. If you see dark clouds building over the headland, head in. Lightning over open water in a small fiberglass boat is genuinely dangerous.
Bring cash. There's no ATM in Gerupuk village — withdraw in Kuta before driving over. Boat fees, parking, and warung meals are all cash.
Pack layers for the boat. Even though it's warm, the boat ride back during a rainstorm will chill you. Light shell jacket helps.
Surf Inside Gerupuk in the morning before 10am — afternoon storms are near-daily and the boat ride back gets unpleasant. Early morning has the calmest sea between the launch beach and the reefs. Bring your own board if possible; January rentals in Kuta are limited as some shops reduce inventory for the wet season.
