Mataram (Cakranegara and Karang Jangkong)
★ 4.5(87 reviews)
Mataram has the cheapest motorbike rental on Lombok and the widest selection (Honda Beat, Vario, PCX, Sonic, Vixion, plus dual-purpose bikes). Daily rates 60-180k IDR depending on model; weekly and monthly rates significantly cheaper than Kuta or Senggigi. Best for digital nomads or long-stay travelers based in or near Mataram.
# Mataram Motorbike Rental: Long-Stay and Serious Riders
Mataram is Lombok's capital city — a working urban center, not a tourist destination. Foreign travelers usually pass through Mataram on the way to or from somewhere else (airport, Senggigi, Bangsal Harbor). But Mataram has the island's best motorbike rental ecosystem if you know where to look and what to ask for.
Better pricing: Mataram shops charge 10-25% less than Kuta or Senggigi for the same bikes. Daily Honda Beat at 60-80k IDR vs 70-100k. Monthly Honda PCX at 2.5-3.5M IDR vs 3-4M in tourist areas.
Wider selection: Tourist-area shops mostly stock Beat and Vario. Mataram dealers also have manual sport bikes (Honda Sonic, Yamaha Vixion), dual-purpose bikes (Kawasaki KLX 150, Honda CRF150L), and larger commuter bikes (Yamaha NMAX, Honda PCX).
Better maintenance: Several Mataram rental shops are run out of authorized Honda or Yamaha dealer service centers. Bikes are properly maintained and breakdowns get real service rather than roadside zip-ties.
Long-stay rates: Monthly rentals get serious discounts that tourist areas don't offer. A Honda Vario for a month is 1.8-2.2M IDR in Mataram vs 2.5-3M in Kuta.
This guide is mainly for:
1. Digital nomads or long-stay travelers basing in or near Mataram
2. Serious riders wanting manual bikes or dual-purpose machines for off-road/Rinjani approach
3. Budget travelers comfortable with the Mataram pickup logistics
4. Locals or expats getting longer-term transport
If you're a 1-week tourist staying in Senggigi or Kuta, the savings don't justify the Mataram pickup hassle. Rent locally.

Mataram rental shops are mostly along Jalan Pejanggik, Jalan Hasanuddin, and Jalan AA Gede Ngurah in the Cakranegara and Karang Jangkong areas. They're not on a single tourist strip — you need to find specific shops.
Easiest approach:
1. Take a Grab/Gojek to the rental shop from your accommodation
2. Pickup the bike at the shop
3. Ride to your final destination
For tourists arriving fresh at LOP airport, this is awkward. The simplest pickup logistic is: airport taxi or Damri bus to Mataram, then Grab to the rental shop, then ride to your accommodation. This eats half a day.
For someone already based in Mataram or arriving from a previous Indonesian city, pickup is straightforward.
If you're renting for a month or more:
Mataram and the Mataram-Senggigi corridor have the most frequent police checkpoints on Lombok. The fine for unlicensed riding is 250,000-500,000 IDR (negotiable). For long-stay travelers riding daily, you will encounter checkpoints — get an international driving permit with motorcycle endorsement before traveling.
If stopped without license: be polite, accept the fine, get a receipt if possible. Don't argue. Some checkpoints will let you off with a warning if you're polite and apologetic; others fine on the spot.
Most Mataram rental shops close 12pm-2pm on Fridays for Jumu'ah (Friday prayer). Don't plan a Friday lunchtime pickup. Saturdays are normal business hours.
Long-stay travelers (3+ weeks) where the savings are substantial, digital nomads basing in Mataram-Senggigi corridor, serious riders wanting manual or dual-purpose bikes not available in tourist areas, and travelers comfortable with the pickup logistics. Skip if you're a 1-week tourist (the savings don't justify the hassle) or if you don't have basic Indonesian to navigate non-tourist shop interactions.
