Sama-Sama is the bar that has been on the strip longer than most of the people drinking at it. It opened in the early 2000s when Gili Trawangan was still a sleepy backpacker rumor, and it has stayed open through every iteration of the island since — including the 2018 earthquake that flattened half its neighbors. The reason it survives is simple: it does one thing — live reggae, every night, for a fair price — and it does it well.
A house band plays nightly from around 9pm to 1am with two or three sets. The musicianship is genuinely good. These aren't bored covers-only players going through the motions; they bring energy, take requests, and the lead singer engages the crowd. The setlist is reggae standards (Marley, Tosh, Burning Spear) plus Indonesian reggae and a handful of crowd-pleaser covers reworked into reggae. By midnight on a busy night the dance area in front of the band is packed.
If you don't like reggae you won't like Sama-Sama. That's the entire programming.
Gili Trawangan operates on a rotating "party night" calendar where the island's main bars take turns hosting the official big night. Sama-Sama owns Tuesday. On Tuesdays the strip in front of Sama-Sama becomes effectively a street party — extra speakers go out, the open frontage spills crowd onto the path, and dive crews from all over the island descend after dinner. It runs hard from 11pm to 3am.
Other party-night assignments shift season to season but the working schedule in 2026 is roughly: Monday Blue Marlin, Tuesday Sama-Sama, Wednesday Tir na Nog, Thursday Jiggy, Friday Surf Bar, Saturday Exile, Sunday quiet (or rotating). Verify the current week's lineup with your hostel — it does change.
Bintang large bottle is 50,000 IDR — fair for the strip and cheaper than the beach-side sunset bars. Cocktails run 90,000–130,000 IDR. They're not crafted-cocktail-bar quality but they're honest pours and won't water you down. Tequila and arak shots are 40,000 IDR each and the standard "bucket" of mixed shots — a Gili party staple — runs 250,000–350,000 IDR depending on what you put in it.
Mushroom shakes are openly sold on Gili Trawangan and Sama-Sama is one of the venues where you'll see them on the menu. They're legal in this part of Indonesia and the bar has been serving them for two decades. Whether to drink one is your call; staff don't push them and most regulars stick to beer and cocktails.
Backpacker, divemaster, and dive-pro crew dominate. You'll meet a lot of people who have been on the island for "two more weeks" for the past year. Couples and solo travelers mix easily. Solo female travelers report Sama-Sama as one of the easier party bars on Gili T to enjoy alone — the staff watch out for regulars and the open-front layout means you're never trapped in a dark corner.
The dress code is whatever you wore snorkeling, plus possibly shoes. Nobody cares.
Gili T has no motor vehicles. After 2am the only ways back to your accommodation are walking or hiring a horse-cart cidomo (50,000–100,000 IDR depending on distance and how drunk you look). Walking is generally fine but the back paths are unlit — use a phone torch and avoid cutting through the village paths alone if you're stumbling.
Petty theft is real on the main strip during peak crowd. Phones get lifted from back pockets. Wear a small bumbag or keep it in a front zip pocket.
If you want live reggae and a friendly community bar, every night. If you want to experience the island's signature party night, on a Tuesday. If you want to meet other travelers in a low-pressure setting, anytime before 11pm. Skip Sama-Sama if you hate reggae, want quiet conversation, or are a light sleeper staying within earshot.
