Woodstock Cottages is a simple budget property in Kuta Lombok, a 5-minute walk from the main town strip and a 10-minute scooter ride from the surf beaches. Cottages run 250,000–550,000 IDR/night. It is one of the better budget surf-traveller stays in Kuta — clean, friendly, scooter-rental on-site, and consistently reviewed for years. Don't expect AC luxury or pool resort facilities.
# Woodstock Cottages Kuta Lombok: The Reliable Budget Surf Stay
Woodstock Cottages is one of those budget properties that doesn't try to be something it isn't. There is no pool, no spa, no restaurant beyond a simple breakfast. What there is: clean basic cottages, friendly staff, a 5-minute walk to the Kuta town restaurant strip, and prices that haven't kept pace with the broader Kuta inflation. For surf travellers and budget-conscious visitors, that is exactly the right product.
Founded around 2014 by a Spanish-Indonesian couple, the property is a small cluster of about 12 wooden cottages set in a garden compound off the main Kuta beach road. The Spanish co-owner used to be a surf instructor and the property still attracts a strong proportion of surf travellers — the surfboard rinse station, the on-site scooter rental, and the staff knowledge of surf transfer logistics all reflect that.
Two main categories. Standard Fan Cottages are simple wooden cottages with private terraces, outdoor bathrooms, ceiling fans, and basic furnishings (250,000–350,000 IDR/night). AC Cottages are similar layout with air-conditioning, slightly larger interior, and more recent refurbishment (450,000–550,000 IDR/night).
For travellers visiting June–September (drier and slightly cooler), the Fan Cottages are entirely comfortable — Kuta has steady ocean breeze and rooms cool down at night. For March–May (the hottest months) and travellers who sleep poorly in heat, the AC upgrade is worth it. The price difference (about 200,000 IDR) buys real comfort during the heat months.
There are no family rooms — book two adjacent cottages if travelling as a group of four.
Woodstock is a 5-minute walk from the main Kuta beach road where most restaurants, surf shops, and coffee places concentrate. Krnk, Spicy, Ashtari Lounge, El Bazar, and Bush Radio are all within 5–10 minutes' walk. From Lombok International Airport: 30-minute drive (180,000 IDR by Grab, 250,000 IDR for a private car).
The surf beaches are a separate trip. Mawun (15 minutes by scooter), Selong Belanak (25 minutes), Are Guling (10 minutes), Mawi (35 minutes) are all scooter-distance, not walkable. Woodstock rents scooters at 70,000 IDR/day with surfboard rack — the standard Kuta arrangement. If you don't want to drive, the staff arrange shared transfers (50,000 IDR each way to Selong Belanak) or full driver-and-car for around 350,000 IDR/day.
The property is genuinely budget — wooden walls, simple bathrooms, no frills. What it gets right is cleanliness and staff attitude. Cottages are cleaned daily, sheets changed regularly, and the staff genuinely seem to care about guest satisfaction. Reviews have been consistently positive for nearly a decade, which is unusual at this price point.
Outdoor bathrooms are a nice touch and work well in Kuta's climate. The bathroom is walled and private but open to the sky in the shower area — pleasant rather than utilitarian.
Breakfast is basic — eggs, toast, fruit, coffee, or pancakes — served at communal garden tables. Quality is fine but not a destination meal. For lunch and dinner, you walk to town. This is part of the appeal: in 5 minutes you're at any of Kuta's restaurants, which include genuinely good Indonesian, Italian, Mexican, and burger options at much better prices than hotel dining anywhere else in Lombok.
There is no swimming pool. For travellers who want to lounge by a pool between beach trips, this is a real limitation — Kuta's heat in midday genuinely demands cooling off, and walking to the beach (15 minutes) is hot. Solution: scooter to one of the south coast beaches mid-morning, return for shower and town dinner. Or pay 50,000 IDR day-pass at Ashtari Lounge for their pool with view.
Book Woodstock if you are a surf traveller wanting a budget Kuta base with scooter rental on-site and walkable town access. Book it for solo travel or couples on a budget. Book it for traveller-style trips of 5–10 days where you want low fixed costs to free up budget for surf lessons, food, and excursions.
Skip Woodstock if you want a pool, if you're heat-sensitive and need strong AC across all rooms (not just deluxe), if you need on-site dining, or if you want a resort-style stay. For comfort with similar location, look at Hotel Kuta Indah or Mama's Place. For pool resort comfort, Novotel Lombok (5 minutes by scooter, 5x the price).
